Chapter 23: Ghosts of the Past

Olivia's grip tightened around Adrian's hand as she took in the woman standing before them.

Madeline Cross.

The name alone was enough to send a chill down her spine.

She had done her research on Adrian's past, on the betrayal that had once turned the media against him. Madeline had been at the center of it all—a woman he had once trusted, only to be stabbed in the back.

And now she was here, looking amused as her gaze flickered between them.

Adrian's posture was rigid, his jaw locked. "What are you doing here, Madeline?"

She smiled, the picture of effortless confidence. "It's a charity event, darling. Did you think you were the only one invited?"

Olivia felt Adrian's fingers twitch against hers. A silent warning.

Stay out of this.

But Olivia wasn't the kind to step aside.

Especially not when she sensed danger.

Madeline's gaze shifted to Olivia, sharp and assessing. "And you must be Olivia Carter. The journalist who somehow found herself tangled up with Adrian Hayes."

Olivia lifted her chin, refusing to be intimidated. "That's right."

Madeline hummed, tilting her head. "I have to admit, I'm impressed. You've done a good job convincing people this little romance is real."

Adrian's voice was like steel. "Careful, Madeline."

She ignored him, eyes locked on Olivia. "Tell me, dear. Do you actually know the man you're pretending to love?"

The question sent a jolt through Olivia's chest.

Because it was the same question she had been asking herself.

Did she really know Adrian?

Or had she only seen the version of him he wanted her to see?

She forced a smile. "I know enough."

Madeline's lips curled. "We'll see about that."

Then, with a final glance at Adrian, she turned and disappeared into the crowd.

The second she was gone, Adrian exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair.

Olivia stepped closer. "Adrian…"

"Don't." His voice was tight.

She frowned. "What is she talking about?"

Adrian turned to her, his blue eyes stormy with something unreadable. "It doesn't matter."

But Olivia knew better.

Madeline's presence wasn't a coincidence.

And Olivia had the sinking feeling that whatever secret Adrian was hiding…

Was about to come crashing down.
