Chapter 28: Confrontation

Olivia barely remembered the drive to Adrian's penthouse.

Her mind raced, replaying every word Madeline had said.

"Ask Adrian about the contract."

She didn't know what it meant, but one thing was clear—Madeline had planted doubt, and it was growing fast.

By the time she reached his building, she wasn't sure if she was more furious at Madeline for twisting the truth or at herself for not demanding answers sooner.

The elevator ride to the top floor was suffocatingly silent.

When the doors slid open, Adrian was already waiting, leaning against the doorway of his penthouse with a drink in his hand.

"You're late," he murmured, his blue eyes unreadable.

Olivia stepped inside, slamming the door behind her. "Cut the act, Adrian."

His brows lifted. "Excuse me?"

She crossed her arms, her pulse racing. "I met with Madeline."

For the first time, a flicker of something—shock, irritation—crossed his face. It was gone in an instant, masked by his usual calm.

"Ah," he said smoothly, setting his drink down. "And what lies did she feed you?"

"She told me about the past. About your partnership. About how you cut her out."

Adrian let out a short laugh. "And you believed her?"

"I don't know what to believe," Olivia admitted. "Because you refuse to tell me anything."

He studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then he sighed, rubbing a hand over his face.

"Olivia, Madeline isn't as innocent as she pretends to be."

"Neither are you," she shot back.

His jaw tightened. "You're right. I've made mistakes. But I didn't betray her."

"Then explain the contract."

Silence.

A muscle in his jaw ticked. "Where did you hear about that?"

"So it's real," Olivia pressed, stepping closer. "What was in it?"

Adrian's fingers curled into fists at his sides. "It's none of your concern."

Her chest tightened. "None of my concern? I'm—" she stopped herself, biting her lip.

She had almost said I'm falling for you.

But she couldn't. Not when she wasn't even sure if she truly knew him.

Adrian exhaled sharply. "The contract was a business agreement between me and Madeline. It should have ended there. But she wanted more."

Olivia frowned. "More?"

He hesitated, then met her gaze. "She wanted to own me. My career, my future, everything. When I refused, she tried to destroy me."

Olivia's heart pounded.

That… wasn't what Madeline had said at all.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?" she asked quietly.

His lips pressed together. "Because I didn't want you looking at me the way you're looking at me now."

"How am I looking at you?"

"Like you don't know if you can trust me."

Her breath caught.

Because he was right.

Adrian took a step closer, his voice softer now. "Olivia, you're the only person I want to be honest with. But if you don't believe me—if you're going to let Madeline's lies get between us—then tell me now."

Olivia searched his face, torn between doubt and the undeniable pull she felt toward him.

She wanted to believe him.

But was love enough to ignore the secrets still left unsaid?
