Chapter 4: The Cracks in the System

The room was thick with tension as Quinn worked, the only sounds the frantic clattering of keys and the occasional hiss of static from the screens. Darius stood by, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, every muscle in his body coiled with anticipation. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were about to open a door that should never be touched.

Isla, too, was quiet, her eyes scanning the array of monitors as if expecting something to jump out at them. The seconds stretched into what felt like hours.

Finally, Quinn stopped typing, his fingers hovering above the keyboard as the screens blinked and flickered. He leaned back in his chair, a satisfied smirk creeping across his face.

"There we go," he muttered, his voice tinged with amusement, though his eyes remained focused on the data. "You weren't kidding, Darius. This is one hell of a rabbit hole."

Darius moved forward, standing just behind Quinn, his heart pounding. "What did you find?"

Quinn didn't answer right away. Instead, he scrolled through the decrypted files, his eyes flicking from screen to screen. "It's not just about the data. This chip…" He paused, his expression darkening as he highlighted several files in quick succession. "This chip contains a map. But not just any map—it's a map to several hidden facilities, all connected to a central hub. It looks like the organization has been operating in plain sight, disguised as multiple legitimate research centers."

Darius felt a jolt in his chest. Hidden facilities? The thought of his wife and daughter being trapped in such a place, surrounded by monstrous experiments, was almost too much to bear.

"What else?" Darius pressed, his voice tight with urgency.

Quinn swiped through more of the data, his eyes narrowing. "There are encrypted communication logs here, too. Several names I recognize. High-level contacts from all over the globe—military, politics, corporations, even a few tech billionaires. They've been pulling the strings for years, manipulating everything from behind the scenes."

Darius's stomach churned. It was worse than he had imagined. The organization wasn't just a rogue group—it was an intricate web, one that reached into every corner of society. And they had been using his work as a tool to shape the future.

But the worst was yet to come.

"Wait, there's more," Quinn said, his voice lowering. "I've just accessed something deeper. It's a blueprint for... a procedure. Genetic modification." He turned to face Darius, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and alarm. "This is what they've been doing with human subjects. They've been experimenting with your research, Darius—altering DNA to create something new. And they've been doing it on children."

A cold shiver ran down Darius's spine as the implications of what Quinn had said settled in. Evelyn. His daughter had been part of this twisted science. The genetic experiments, the modifications... it was all too clear now.

"How are they doing it?" Isla asked, her voice steady but taut with concern.

Quinn's eyes flickered back to the screen, his fingers hovering over the mouse. "They're using a technique that accelerates cellular regeneration—something in your research that they've repurposed for their own means. But this isn't just about creating superhumans. No, this is worse. They're using the process to 'mark' subjects for something far darker. The children they're experimenting on—your daughter could be one of them—are being groomed for some kind of… project."

Darius felt his breath catch. "Project? What project?"

Quinn looked up, his face grave. "I'm still digging, but there's a term here… 'Subject Zero.' It keeps showing up in the data, connected to every facility, every experiment. Whoever—or whatever—Subject Zero is, they're the key to everything."

The words hit Darius like a physical blow. He staggered back, his mind reeling. Subject Zero. The name felt familiar, but he couldn't place it. What did it mean? Why had it been linked to his daughter?

"You're sure about this?" Darius asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Quinn nodded grimly. "The project's primary objective is to control genetic outcomes. It's not about curing disease, or enhancing abilities. They're trying to engineer something… beyond human."

Darius's fists clenched so tight his nails dug into his palms. "And my daughter—she's part of this experiment?" His voice cracked, the pain evident, but underneath it was the unmistakable fire of rage.

Isla turned toward him, her face drawn, but her eyes filled with a quiet determination. "We're getting closer, Darius. We have a name, a place, and now we need to act."

But Quinn wasn't finished. He turned back to the screen, scrolling through more data. "One more thing," he said, almost absentmindedly, as though it was an afterthought. "I've located one of their servers. A high-security one. If we can get in, we can get the full details on Subject Zero and their project. But getting in won't be easy."

Darius moved closer, his mind already working. "Where is it?"

Quinn looked up at him, his eyes narrowing. "The facility is deep underground, hidden in the mountains. The access point is located in an old, abandoned military base—they've been using it as a front."

Darius's heart pounded. It was exactly what he had feared: a well-guarded location, one that was practically unreachable. But this was the next step. It was the only way forward.

"How soon can we get there?" Darius asked, the words slipping out before he could stop them. His mind was made up. This was the moment.

Quinn hesitated for a moment, eyeing him cautiously. "I can get you in," he said slowly, "but you'll need a team. You won't get past security alone. And trust me, once you're in, there's no turning back."

Darius didn't hesitate. "I don't care. I'm going."

Isla looked at him, her face hardening with resolve. "I'm in, too."

Quinn exhaled sharply, leaning back in his chair. "You're both insane. But alright, I'll prepare the coordinates. You'll need weapons, a plan… and a hell of a lot of luck."

Darius felt the fire of vengeance ignite in his chest once more. Subject Zero, the experiments, Evelyn—this was no longer about survival. This was about ending the nightmare once and for all. They had the pieces of the puzzle, and now it was time to confront the heart of the beast.

As Quinn began typing once again, Darius turned to Isla. "Get everything ready. We leave at dawn."
