Chapter 7: A Dangerous Shift

The silent war between Ariana and Leila continued.

Days turned into weeks, and the project forced them to sit together, forced them to speak, forced them to acknowledge the weight of everything left unsaid. But outside of that?

Nothing.

Leila never looked her way in the hallways.

Ariana never tried to fix what was broken.

And yet, the universe refused to let them go their separate ways.

It started with whispers.

At first, Ariana ignored them.

But then, she heard his name.

"Did you hear? Damien Blackwell is still chasing that scholarship girl."

"She's playing hard to get."

"I heard she rejected him. Twice."

Ariana nearly dropped her books.

Damien? Chasing Leila?

No. That wasn't possible.

She had seen the way Leila smirked at him during the gala, the way she played along with his game. But rejecting him? That wasn't how this worked. Girls like Leila didn't turn down boys like Damien.

They couldn't.

She was still lost in thought when she spotted them across the courtyard.

Leila stood under a tree, arms crossed, expression unreadable. Damien was in front of her, looking at her with an intensity Ariana recognized all too well.

Because once upon a time, Leila had looked at her that way.

Damien reached out, his fingers brushing against Leila's chin, tilting it up.

Ariana felt something ugly twist inside her.

Leila took a step back.

Damien's smirk faltered. He said something, but Leila only shook her head before walking away, leaving him standing alone.

Ariana turned on her heel, walking in the opposite direction before anyone could see the way her hands trembled.

That night, Ariana couldn't sleep.

Her thoughts were a mess.

Damien liked Leila.

Leila didn't want him.

So why did it feel like Ariana was losing something?

Why did it feel like Leila wasn't just rejecting Damien?

Why did it feel like she was rejecting the world Ariana had abandoned her for?

The next day, Ariana found herself outside the library, heart pounding. She didn't know why she was there.

But when Leila stepped outside, their eyes met.

And this time, Ariana refused to look away.
