Chapter 39: A Heart Caught in Shadows

Ariana stood rooted to the spot, Ethan's words echoing in her mind like a haunting melody.

"Who you really want."

She hated him for saying it.

She hated herself for not having an answer.

Leila was still watching, her gaze heavy with unspoken thoughts. The tension in the air was suffocating. Ariana finally forced herself to move, turning on her heels and striding toward the exit.

The cool night air hit her skin, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside.

She pulled out her phone, fingers hovering over Ryan's contact. A distraction. That's what she needed.

But before she could press call—

"Avoiding me already?"

Leila's voice. Soft. Knowing.

Ariana tensed. She didn't turn around. "I don't have time for this."

Leila stepped closer, her heels clicking against the pavement. "You never do, do you?"

Ariana closed her eyes briefly before opening them again. "What do you want, Leila?"

A soft chuckle. "You tell me."

Ariana finally turned to face her. The glow of the streetlights bathed Leila in golden light, highlighting the curve of her lips—lips that held a knowing smirk.

"You were listening," Ariana accused.

Leila tilted her head, amusement flickering in her dark eyes. "Would you have preferred I didn't?"

Ariana exhaled sharply. "I don't have time for mind games tonight."

Leila took another step forward. Close enough for Ariana to catch the faint scent of her perfume. Close enough to be dangerous.

"You don't like games?" Leila mused. "That's funny. Because you've been playing one this whole time."

Ariana's fingers curled into fists. "I don't owe you an explanation."

Leila leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a whisper. "No. But maybe you owe yourself one."

The words were too similar to Ethan's. Too sharp. Too accurate.

Ariana's heartbeat stuttered.

Leila's lips curved into a slow smile. "Who do you really want, Ariana?"

The question sliced through her.

She hated it.

She hated that she didn't have an answer.

She hated that, right now, with Leila standing so close, staring at her like she already knew the truth—

She couldn't breathe.
