The city was quiet—too quiet. The kind of silence that lingered before a storm.
Luca stood by the window of the safe house, watching the empty streets. His mind was a battlefield, torn between the war he was about to start and the woman lying behind him, still fighting to stay conscious.
Evelyn.
He turned to look at her. She was resting now, her chest rising and falling steadily, but she wasn't out of danger yet. The bullet had missed anything vital, but the blood loss had left her weak. Too weak to run if they had to.
Dante sat in the corner, reloading his gun. "I called Enzo," he said. "He's on his way."
Luca didn't reply. He was still staring at Evelyn, his jaw clenched tight.
Dante sighed. "Luca, you need to focus."
"I am."
"No, you're distracted." Dante leaned forward. "You're thinking about her when you should be thinking about how we're going to kill Vincenzo."
Luca's fingers curled into fists. "I can do both."
Dante scoffed. "Yeah? Because last I checked, love and war don't mix well."
Luca turned slowly, his eyes dark with something dangerous. "Then I guess you don't know what it means to love someone."
Dante held his gaze. "And I guess you don't know what it means to go to war."
A knock at the door ended their conversation. Luca reached for his gun, but Dante motioned for him to wait.
"It's Enzo."
Luca unlocked the door, and Enzo slipped inside, dressed in all black. His expression was grim. "Vincenzo knows you're coming for him."
Luca didn't flinch. "Good."
"He's already making moves," Enzo continued. "I overheard some of his men talking. He's setting a trap."
Luca smirked. "Then we'll walk right into it."
Dante shook his head. "You're out of your mind."
"No," Luca said, his voice steady. "I just don't care anymore."
Dante cursed under his breath. "So what's the plan?"
Luca glanced back at Evelyn one last time before turning to them.
"We hit him first."
And we don't stop until he's dead.
