The sirens grew louder, flashing red and blue lights slicing through the darkened alleyways. Luca's grip on Evelyn tightened as Dante and Enzo quickly gathered what they could from the bloodstained ground.
Vincenzo lay unconscious, his breathing shallow, his once-unshakable arrogance reduced to nothing. It would have been so easy to end him right then and there. But Luca had made his choice.
He wasn't going to let revenge define him.
"Move!" Dante urged, snapping Luca back to reality.
They sprinted toward the black SUV waiting at the alley's entrance. Luca guided Evelyn inside first before sliding in after her. The doors slammed shut, and the car peeled away just as squad cars flooded the scene behind them.
The weight in Luca's chest didn't lift until they were miles away, speeding toward the city outskirts. He turned to Evelyn, his fingers brushing against the dried blood on her temple.
"Did he hurt you?" His voice was rough, edged with something dangerous.
She shook her head. "No. But he would have if you didn't stop him."
Luca exhaled sharply, leaning back against the seat. He knew that. He knew how close he'd been to losing her.
Dante, behind the wheel, glanced at them through the rearview mirror. "That was close."
Enzo scoffed. "Too close."
Silence settled over them.
Then Evelyn reached for Luca's hand.
Her fingers laced with his, grounding him, reminding him of why he had fought so hard to begin with.
Luca lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a kiss against her knuckles. "It's over."
Evelyn smiled faintly. "Is it?"
The question hung between them.
For years, Luca had lived in a world where nothing was ever truly over. There was always another enemy, another threat lurking in the shadows. But tonight felt different.
For the first time, there was no war left to fight.
Just them.
Just the possibility of something more.
Dante pulled the SUV off the main road, navigating toward an abandoned warehouse—one of their safe houses on the outskirts of the city.
As they stepped out, Luca helped Evelyn onto her feet, keeping her close. Enzo locked the doors behind them, and Dante secured the perimeter before nodding.
"We lay low for a while," Dante said. "At least until we know what the fallout looks like."
Luca nodded.
But Evelyn turned to him, her eyes searching his. "And then what?"
Luca wasn't sure.
He had spent so long fighting, running, surviving.
What did a life beyond all of this even look like?
Enzo sighed. "I don't know about you guys, but I need a damn drink." He wandered toward the kitchen, leaving the rest of them in silence.
Dante smirked. "He's not wrong."
Luca barely heard them. His focus was entirely on Evelyn—the woman who had walked into his life like a firestorm, tearing through every carefully built wall he had.
"Come with me," he said suddenly.
Evelyn blinked. "What?"
Luca took her hands in his. "Leave this all behind. The city, the blood, the chaos. Just… go somewhere new. With me."
Evelyn studied him, searching his face for hesitation.
She found none.
"You mean that?" she whispered.
Luca cupped her cheek. "More than anything."
A slow smile spread across her lips. "Then let's go."
His heart clenched.
For the first time in his life, he saw something he never had before.
A future worth fighting for.
