The Trial Begins
As soon as Apprentice Thorne vanished, a deafening silence filled the air. Then—
BOOM!
A loud gong echoed across the field, signaling the start of the test.
Like arrows released from drawn bows, the students burst forward, each determined to reach the finish line before the timer goes off.
Kaidën pushed off the ground with explosive force, his feet pounding against the dirt as he surged forward. Dust and sand flew into the air as the hundred-plus participants sprinted ahead, their eyes locked on the first challenge—the five-mile dash.
The Sprint & The Maze
Kaidën kept a steady pace, careful not to expend all his energy too soon. Some students rushed ahead at reckless speeds, trying to gain an early lead, but Kaidën knew better. A test like this wasn't about who was fastest at the start—it was about who could last until the end.
The winding maze loomed before them. A labyrinth of stone and wood, its narrow corridors twisted unpredictably. Without hesitation, Kaidën darted inside, his keen eyes scanning ahead for the best route.
Screams of frustration echoed through the maze as some students took wrong turns, running into dead ends. Others collided with each other in the cramped space. Kaidën kept low, weaving through the passages with cat-like agility, relying on instinct and quick decision-making.
A flicker of silver caught his eye— the girl with emerald eyes was moving just as swiftly, her silver hair flowing behind her as she navigated the maze with surprising ease.
Kaidën clenched his fists and pushed forward. He had no time to admire his competition.
The Hurdles & Balance Beam
Bursting out of the maze, Kaidën barely had a moment to breathe before he faced the next challenge: the hurdles.
The first was low—simple enough. With a quick bound, he cleared it. But the second was higher. And the third? Even higher still.
Some students stumbled, their feet catching on the hurdles, sending them tumbling into the dirt. Others hesitated, losing precious time.
Kaidën took a deep breath and leaped.
His body twisted mid-air, clearing the third hurdle by the narrowest of margins. He landed smoothly, rolling forward before pushing himself up in one motion.
Ahead, the balance beam awaited. A long, narrow plank suspended over a pit of soft sand. A fall wouldn't be fatal, but it would waste time.
Kaidën sprinted forward, planting one foot on the beam. His arms extended for balance as he ran across with careful, measured steps.
A sharp cry broke his focus—one of the students had lost their footing and tumbled off.
Kaidën swallowed hard but didn't slow down.
The Final Climb
The last obstacle loomed ahead—a towering padded wall.
It stood at least three times his height, smooth except for a few embedded handholds. Students were already scrambling up, fingers gripping desperately as they hoisted themselves higher.
Kaidën inhaled sharply and leaped. His hands latched onto the lowest hold, his arms burning as he pulled himself up.
Others struggled, some losing their grip and sliding back down. The boy with the messy brown hair, the one with the wide grin plastered on his face earlier, climbed with ease, swinging from handhold to handhold like a monkey.
Kaidën gritted his teeth and climbed faster. The top was in sight.
He reached out— almost there…
