The moment Master Juro gave the command, the thirty students sprang into action.
The pit below was filled with challenges that tested raw physical strength—massive stone weights that needed to be lifted, thick logs that required teamwork to move, and climbing ropes that stretched high into the air.
Kaidën leaped down, his muscles already aching from yesterday's trials, but he refused to slow down.
As he moved toward a set of heavy stones, he heard a familiar voice beside him.
"Hey, you—long coat guy!"
Kaidën turned to see the grinning boy with messy brown hair from the entrance exams. Sweat dripped from his forehead, but his eyes were still full of energy.
"Figured I'd introduce myself before we collapse from exhaustion. Name's Renji."
Kaidën smirked slightly and grabbed a stone weight. "Kaidën."
Renji grabbed his own stone and let out a loud groan as he tried to lift it. "Ugh—why does this thing feel like it weighs a house?!"
Kaidën chuckled. "Because it probably does."
Renji gave him a sideways look. "Oh, you're one of those guys, huh? The 'mysterious warrior' type?" He struggled but finally lifted the stone to his chest. "Gotta say, you don't talk much, but you handled that illusion test like a pro."
Kaidën shrugged. "Giving up isn't an option."
Renji let out a sharp laugh. "Then we'll get along just fine."
As they continued moving the stones, a third voice interrupted.
"You two are wasting energy talking."
They turned to see the silver-haired girl with emerald eyes from before. Her tone was calm, but there was a sharpness to it. Even though sweat trickled down her face, she moved with precise, calculated movements—like someone trained from birth.
Kaidën met her gaze. "And you are?"
She lifted a wooden log onto her shoulders with relative ease. "Selene Varos."
Renji whistled. "Oh, so you're one of those noble types? Thought you'd be too good to talk to us common folk."
Selene arched a delicate brow. "Strength does not recognize nobility. Only effort."
Kaidën nodded in agreement, earning a glance from Selene.
Renji groaned. "Great. Now there are two of you who are all serious and brooding."
Kaidën smirked.
Selene shook her head but didn't argue. Instead, she turned her gaze to the next obstacle—the massive climbing ropes.
"We're falling behind," she noted. "The weak will be punished."
Kaidën and Renji followed her gaze. Some students were already halfway up the ropes, while others struggled just to get their footing.
"Then let's move," Kaidën said simply.
Renji groaned but grinned. "Fine, fine. But if I fall and break my neck, you two owe me dinner."
Selene rolled her eyes. "Just don't fall."
Together, they sprinted toward the ropes.
