CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Thirty Minutes Later

The fifteen qualified competitors stood in a row, catching their breath, when Apprentice Thorn stepped forward. His sharp gaze swept over them as he spoke.

"As I said earlier, the second stage will be the same as the first—except now, there will be only five arenas, Five defenders. If you want to advance, you must defeat three challengers in a row to claim a spot."

The moment he finished speaking, Kaïdën wasted no time. He dashed toward an open arena, claiming it before anyone else. Looking around, he saw that some of his strongest rivals had done the same. Kane, the purple-haired menace, stood in another ring. Darius. Renji. Selene. Almost all of his friends and fiercest opponents had made it this far—except for one.

The second stage began.

Kaïdën held his ground, taking down each challenger with swift, precise strikes. He was feeling confident, his body moving in perfect sync with his instincts. Victory after victory, he defended his arena—until his final opponent stepped in.

A noble.

Black hair, wine-colored eyes, a physique eerily similar to Kaïdën's. The moment he laid eyes on his opponent, Kaïdën's instincts prickled. Something's off.

The referee raised his hand. "Begin!"

Kaïdën barely had time to react before—BAM!

A palm strike materialized right in front of his face, as if the noble had teleported.

A blinding impact. Pain exploded through Kaïdën's skull.

Darkness.

One Hour Later

Kaïdën awoke with a sharp inhale, eyes snapping open. He was in a white room, his head throbbing like someone had split it open.

"What the hell…" he groaned, clutching his temples as flashes of the fight flickered through his mind.

No—it hadn't even been a fight.

What kind of monster was that?! I didn't even see him strike! How the hell did I get knocked out in one hit?!

Frustration surged through him, but before he could dwell on it, a nurse walked in. He barely spared her a glance as she ran a few routine checks, his mind still reeling from the loss.

After what felt like an eternity, he was released. Outside, he ran into Renji, who greeted him with a smirk.

"Yo, sleeping beauty. You got ranked eighth."Kaïdën blinked. "Huh? How the hell did that happen? I got knocked out."

Selene, stepping out of the women's showers, tossed him a towel before answering. "The final ranking wasn't based on strength. It's about how long you held out before losing. You survived longer than some others, so you placed higher."

Kaïdën frowned, rubbing his chin. "That's kind of unfair, don't you think? It doesn't measure actual skill."

"Life isn't fair," Renji chuckled. "Take the win."

Before Kaïdën could argue, a martial artist—one of the ones standing beside Apprentice Thorn earlier—stepped onto thestage.

"Top ten, follow me."

He turned and walked away without waiting for a response.

Kaïdën exchanged glances with Renji and Selene before shaking off his lingering frustration.

Alright. Time to move forward.

With that, he followed the others, stepping into whatever awaited them next.
