These words made me laugh. Whoever's kid it was, it had nothing to do with me, so naturally I didn't need to take responsibility.

I didn't answer her question, but instead reminded her, "You got the court hearing notice, right? Remember to show up."

I hung up the phone and hurried to the bank to change my account password.

Better safe than sorry.

At the same time, I felt somewhat relieved that I had immediately used my paycheck to pay off debts.

As the court hearing date drew closer each day, I felt even more motivated at work.

But I never expected to one day see Melody outside the company.

She was shouting through a megaphone in front of the building, and had even hung banners in the nearby trees.

She called me out by name, accusing me of betrayal and abandoning her and the child.

A crowd had already gathered, listening to her dramatically fabricate stories of how I had mistreated and cruelly rejected her.
