The night was thick with mist.
Kaito stood on the edge of the training grounds, his arms crossed, his sharp gaze sweeping the sect.
The second pendant had been left for him last night.
An invitation.
But to what?
He had spent the day watching, waiting, and listening. The death of Elder Hwang had shaken the sect, and though no one spoke of it openly, there was an undercurrent of fear in the air. The inner disciples whispered in hushed voices, the outer disciples kept their heads down, and the sect elders…
They were watching.
Not for the killer—but for any sign of weakness.
Because in the world of Murim, a dead elder wasn't just a tragedy.
It was an opportunity.
Someone had killed Elder Hwang for a reason.
And tonight, Kaito would find out why.

The Message
A single knock echoed through his room.
Kaito, already expecting it, moved quietly and slid the door open.
No one was there.
But on the ground, a small rolled-up parchment lay waiting.
Kaito bent down, picking it up. His fingers unrolled the delicate paper, and under the dim candlelight, he read the short, precise message written in elegant, flowing script.
> Southern Cliff Bridge. Midnight.
Come alone.
No name. No sender.
But Kaito already knew.
The Black Lotus had made their next move.
---
A Path of No Return
The Southern Cliff Bridge was one of the most isolated locations in the sect.
It stretched across a deep ravine, a wooden path flanked by towering cliffs on both sides.
A perfect place for an ambush.
A perfect place to kill.
Kaito arrived exactly at midnight. The mist had thickened, curling around the bridge like ghostly tendrils. The only sound was the faint creaking of the wooden planks under his steps.
Then—
A shadow moved.
A figure stepped out of the mist, clad in black robes, a hood covering their face.
Kaito's hand hovered near his sword, but he didn't draw it.
The figure raised their head slightly, revealing a sharp, thin-lipped mouth. The voice that came from it was low, measured, almost… amused.
"You didn't hesitate."
Kaito smirked. "If I did, I wouldn't be here."
The hooded figure tilted their head. "Good. Hesitation is the difference between a blade that kills and a blade that rusts."
Then, without warning—
A knife flew straight at Kaito's head.
---
The Trial Begins
Kaito tilted his head at the last second.
The blade sliced past his ear, embedding itself into the wooden bridge behind him.
No hesitation. No warning.
They were testing him.
And Kaito knew how to respond.
In a single motion, he stepped forward—fast—closing the distance between them in an instant. His hand shot out, fingers wrapping around the hilt of the dagger in the bridge.
A weapon thrown was a weapon wasted.
He ripped it out of the wood and threw it back.
Straight for the figure's throat.
The hooded figure barely moved.
But at the last second, with an inhuman smoothness, they turned their head slightly, the blade grazing their cheek before vanishing into the mist behind them.
Then… they smiled.
"Not bad."
Kaito's stance remained firm. "Was that the test?"
The figure chuckled. "No. That was the introduction."
They took a step forward, their voice lowering.
"The Black Lotus doesn't take in just anyone. We don't train warriors. We don't teach fools. We find killers."
Another step forward.
"And we test them the only way that matters."
A small parchment was slipped into Kaito's hand.
His fingers unrolled it, revealing a name.
His first target.
A single sentence followed.
> Kill them before dawn. Or be hunted.
Kaito's grip on the parchment tightened.
This was it.
The final step.
There was no turning back.
The hooded figure's voice was almost… hungry.
"Welcome to the abyss, Jin Tae-Hyun."
And then—
They vanished into the mist.
Leaving Kaito alone with a single truth.
The first kill in this new life… would not be for survival.
It would be a choice.
