The Aftermath of a Mistake

The silence in the grand hall was suffocating.

Chris stood frozen, his gaze locked on Adrian's lifeless body. The blood seeped into the cold marble floor, a stark contrast to the empire's untouchable image.

Skylar covered her mouth, horror flashing in her eyes. Christiana remained still, her expression unreadable, but there was a shift in her stance—one of anticipation, as if waiting for her father's reaction.

Ethan, however, did not move. His grip on the gun was firm, his expression unwavering. "He was a threat," he repeated, as if saying it again would justify his action.

Chris slowly turned his head to face him.

"And since when," Chris's voice was dangerously low, "did you have the authority to make that decision?"

Ethan didn't blink. "He challenged you. He lunged at you. It was an act of defiance."

Chris stepped forward, his eyes burning with an intensity that made even the guards step back. "Did I give the order?"

Ethan hesitated, but only for a moment. "No."

"Then you have overstepped your boundaries."

The weight of Chris's words settled over the room like a storm cloud. No one dared to speak.

"Guards," Chris called out.

Immediately, armed men surrounded Ethan, awaiting their orders.

Ethan's face remained impassive, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes—something no one had ever seen before.

Doubt.

"Are you going to punish me for eliminating an enemy?" Ethan asked, his voice controlled, but there was an edge to it.

Chris's expression was unreadable. "I do not tolerate betrayal, Ethan. And you have just betrayed my rule."

Skylar took a step forward, her voice urgent. "Chris, he didn't mean—"

"He did." Chris cut her off sharply. His gaze never left Ethan's. "And now he must face the consequences."

The tension in the room was unbearable. Even Christiana, who had been loyal to Chris's every decision, glanced between them cautiously.

Ethan squared his shoulders. "Then make your decision, God of the Empire."

Chris took a slow breath. The entire world was watching, waiting. If he punished Ethan too harshly, it would weaken his own rule. If he let this go, it would set a precedent for disobedience.

"Strip him of his title for one year." Chris finally declared. "He will remain in power, but he will hold no authority until I say otherwise."

Gasps rippled through the room. Even Christiana's eyes widened slightly.

Ethan clenched his jaw but did not protest. He merely nodded. "Understood."

Chris turned to the guards. "Take Adrian's body. He will be given a proper burial."

As they moved to carry out his orders, Chris exhaled slowly, his mind already calculating his next move.

Ethan had made a mistake.

Now, Chris had to decide what to do with him.
