The air crackled with tension as the hooded figures, Zarthus's Vanguard, advanced. Rin, holding a handful of Fire Peppers, felt a surge of adrenaline. Elara, her hands entwined with vines, stood beside him, her eyes blazing with determination.
"Scatter!" Elara commanded, her voice sharp. "Use the terrain to your advantage!"
The Vanguard charged, their crude swords and axes glinting in the dappled sunlight. Rin, remembering Lyra's swift movements, ate a Swiftpear, and his reflexes sharpened. He dodged a swing from a hulking figure, his feet moving with newfound agility.
He tossed a Fire Pepper at the ground, and a small explosion erupted, sending a cloud of smoke and flames billowing outwards. The Vanguard stumbled, coughing and disoriented. Rin used the distraction to plant a bean from a Rockmelon, and a large, melon-shaped boulder erupted from the earth, blocking the path of the advancing figures.
Elara, meanwhile, moved with a surprising grace, her vine-covered hands lashing out like whips, ensnaring the Vanguard and pulling them off balance. She plucked a glowing, blue fruit from a nearby tree and consumed it. A wave of icy energy emanated from her, freezing the ground and trapping the feet of several attackers.
Rin, witnessing Elara's mastery, realized the true potential of the wild fruits. He began to experiment, planting beans from different fruits and using the resulting growths to create obstacles and distractions. He grew thorny Brambleberries to create makeshift barriers, and he used explosive Burstnuts to launch volleys of projectiles.
The battle raged, the clearing filled with the sounds of clashing steel, crackling energy, and the cries of the Vanguard. Rin and Elara fought side by side, their abilities complementing each other. Rin's creativity and raw fruit power, and Elara's knowledge and refined skill.
One of the Vanguard, a tall, gaunt figure with piercing eyes, broke through their defenses. He wielded a long, serrated blade, and his movements were swift and precise. He lunged at Elara, his blade aimed at her heart.
Rin, seeing the danger, threw himself in front of Elara, taking the blow on his arm. The blade sliced through his skin, drawing a sharp cry of pain.
The gaunt figure smirked, his eyes gleaming with malice. "You cannot protect her, boy. Zarthus will have this orchard."
Rin, his arm throbbing, felt a surge of anger. He reached into his satchel and pulled out a handful of the golden Sunfire Apples. He ate one, and a wave of intense heat spread through his body, his wounds began to close. He ate another, and his muscles bulged with newfound strength.
"You will not take this orchard," Rin growled, his voice filled with a newfound determination. He planted many Sunfire Apple beans, and a wall of small trees grew, their fruit glowing like small suns. He then plucked the fruit, and launched them at the gaunt figure.
The gaunt figure, surprised by Rin's sudden surge of power, was caught off guard. The Sunfire Apples exploded on impact, sending a wave of heat and light that forced him to retreat.
Elara, seeing Rin's power, nodded in approval. "Well done, young one. You are learning quickly."
The remaining Vanguard, seeing their leader retreat, scattered and fled into the woods. Rin and Elara stood side by side, their breaths ragged, their bodies bruised and battered, but victorious.
"They will return," Elara said, her voice grave. "Zarthus will not give up so easily. We must prepare for his next attack."
"Then we will be ready," Rin replied, his eyes filled with determination. "We will protect this orchard, and we will stop Zarthus."
They began to gather the remaining fruit beans, and Elara began to teach Rin more about the wild fruits and their properties. As they worked, Rin knew that their battle was just beginning. The threat of Zarthus loomed large, and the fate of Arboria hung in the balance.
