Celeste never expected her past to walk right through the classroom door.
Yet there she was.
Samantha Velasco.
Her best friend. Her childhood partner-in-crime. The girl who had once known all her secrets, all her dreams.
And now, after years apart, she was back.
Celeste stared in shock as Samantha stood in front of the class, smiling as their teacher introduced her. She was taller now, more confident, her long brown hair cascading in soft waves over her shoulders.
Ryan, sitting beside Celeste, leaned in. "You know her?"
Celeste nodded slowly. "Yeah. I do."
Ryan smirked. "She's cute."
Celeste didn't know why that annoyed her.
Celeste should have been thrilled.
Samantha Velasco—the girl she once spent countless afternoons with, the one who knew her better than anyone—was here. In the same school. In the same section.
But instead of excitement, all she felt was unease.
She wasn't sure why.
Maybe it was the way Samantha's eyes scanned the room, bright and eager, as if searching for something new, something exciting.
Maybe it was the way Ryan had smirked when he called her cute.
Or maybe—just maybe—it was because she knew that nothing from the past ever stayed the same.
Reunions and Introductions
"SAM?"
The moment class ended, Celeste barely had time to react before Samantha squealed and threw her arms around her.
"Celeste!" Samantha held her tight before pulling away and beaming. "I can't believe this! You go here?! This is insane."
Celeste laughed, still stunned. "I should be the one saying that! Why didn't you tell me you were transferring?"
Samantha pouted. "I wanted to surprise you!"
"Well, consider me very surprised."
Samantha grinned, then looked around. "So? What's this class like? Any cute guys?"
Celeste rolled her eyes. "That's the first thing you ask?"
Samantha giggled. "Of course. Priorities, Cels."
Before Celeste could answer, a familiar voice interrupted.
"Depends on what your type is."
Celeste turned just in time to see Ryan smirking, arms crossed as he leaned against a desk.
Samantha blinked, then grinned. "Oh? And who might you be?"
"Ryan Cruz." His voice was smooth, confident. "And you?"
Samantha's grin widened. "Samantha Velasco. Celeste's best friend."
Ryan glanced at Celeste. "Best friend, huh? Why have you been hiding her from us?"
Celeste groaned. "Don't start, Cruz."
But Ryan wasn't paying attention to her anymore. His focus was entirely on Samantha—who, much to Celeste's annoyance, looked just as interested.
The Start of Something Unsettling
Celeste wasn't sure when it happened, but by the end of the day, something between Ryan and Samantha had shifted.
It was subtle—little moments that most people wouldn't have noticed.
The way Samantha would glance at Ryan when he spoke. The way she laughed just a little too hard at his jokes. The way Ryan let her.
And then, just before they parted ways after school, Samantha turned to Celeste with a teasing smile.
"So… tell me more about Ryan."
Celeste froze. "What?"
Samantha giggled. "He's cute. And funny." She nudged Celeste. "Come on, Cels. Give me details. Is he single?"
Celeste forced a smile. "Yeah. He is."
Samantha clapped her hands together. "Perfect."
Perfect.
Then why did it feel like anything but that?
