Chapter 37: Shadows Closing In

The silence inside the safe house was deafening. Liam's grip on his gun tightened as he exchanged glances with Nathan and Seraphina. Catherine, still pale from blood loss, struggled to sit up, her sharp eyes scanning the room.

Someone was outside.

A faint creak on the wooden floorboards near the entrance sent a chill down Liam's spine.

They weren't alone.

Nathan motioned for everyone to stay still. With calculated precision, he crept toward the window, peeking through the edge of the curtain.

"Three figures," he whispered. "Armed."

Liam's heart pounded. "Did they follow us?"

Catherine, wincing as she adjusted her position, smirked. "Oh, Liam, you still don't get it, do you?"

His patience was wearing thin. "Get what?"

She tilted her head, her silver-gray eyes glinting. "They weren't following us. They were already here."

Before Liam could react, the front door burst open.

---

Gunfire exploded through the room.

Liam dived behind the couch, gripping his gun as bullets shredded through the walls. Seraphina knocked over a lamp, plunging part of the room into shadows.

Nathan fired back, his shots precise. "They're trained."

No surprise there. The Syndicate never sent amateurs.

Liam peeked over the couch, spotting a man in tactical gear moving toward the hallway. He took the shot, hitting him in the shoulder. The attacker stumbled, but before Liam could fire again, another one lunged from the side.

Catherine, despite her injury, grabbed a knife from the table and threw it with deadly precision. It sank into the attacker's thigh, making him collapse.

Seraphina didn't hesitate. She finished him off with a quick shot to the head.

The gunfire outside suddenly ceased.

Liam exhaled sharply, his ears still ringing. "That's too easy."

Nathan nodded. "They're regrouping."

Catherine, breathing heavily, smirked. "You've officially pissed off the Syndicate. Congratulations."

Liam ignored her. His mind was already racing ahead.

"We can't stay here."

Seraphina reloaded. "Where do we go?"

Liam hesitated. He knew the answer—but he hated it.

"We need to go back."

Nathan frowned. "Back where?"

Liam exhaled. "To where it all started."

Catherine's smirk vanished.

She knew exactly what he meant.

---

The drive was tense.

Liam sat in the passenger seat, watching the darkened city streets pass by. Seraphina drove with laser focus, while Nathan sat in the back with Catherine, her wound hastily bandaged.

Liam's mind churned with possibilities.

The ledger was a map. A map to the Syndicate's deepest secrets.

And now, the only place that held any real answers…

Was his father's abandoned estate.

Catherine chuckled, breaking the silence. "You sure you're ready for this, Liam?"

He didn't answer.

Because deep down, he wasn't sure anyone was ready for what they would find.
