CHAPTER 1 The Mysterious Celestial Mark
ELDORIS
The moon hung high over Eldoris, its silvery glow illuminating the castle's grand towers and the winding streets below. Inside the palace walls, torches flickered against ancient stone, casting long shadows across the marble floors. Princess Lyra sat by her chamber window, staring at the constellation-laden sky. Ever since she was a child, she had felt a strange connection to the stars, but tonight, their glow seemed… different. Almost as if they were whispering to her.
Her hand subconsciously drifted to the golden mark on her forearm, shaped like an intricate spiral of celestial patterns. It had appeared when she turned seventeen, a symbol no scholar or mage could explain. But its presence had changed everything—whispers spread through the court, and fear festered among the nobles. Some believed it was a blessing; others feared it was a curse that would bring ruin to Eldoris.
A knock at her door pulled her from her thoughts. "Come in," she called.
The door creaked open, revealing her childhood friend and sworn protector, Prince Alden. His dark hair was tousled from training, and his sword hung at his side. "You missed the council meeting," he said, stepping into the room.
"I had no desire to listen to men argue over my fate," Lyra replied, her voice laced with frustration. "They treat me as if I am a pawn on their board."
Alden sighed, leaning against the doorframe. "They are scared, Lyra. The mark… it is an omen of something great or terrible. They don't know which."
"Neither do I."
A heavy silence settled between them before Alden spoke again. "Kael is back."
Lyra's head snapped toward him. "The exiled sorcerer?"
"He returned this morning. He claims he knows the origin of your mark."
Heart pounding, Lyra rose to her feet. "Where is he?"
Kael stood in the grand library, his violet robes brushing against the dusty stone floor. His sharp eyes met Lyra's as she entered, and for a moment, neither spoke. He had been a trusted advisor once, until his experiments in forbidden magic led to his banishment. Yet now, he was the only one who might hold the answers she needed.
"I see the mark has fully formed," Kael murmured, stepping closer. "You have little time."
Lyra frowned. "Little time for what?"
"To understand what you are. To prepare."
Alden stiffened beside her. "Explain."
Kael sighed, his fingers tracing the spines of ancient books. "Long ago, the celestial mark was bestowed upon a chosen bloodline—those meant to act as conduits between the mortal world and the celestial realm. They were the only ones capable of wielding the raw power of the stars."
Lyra's heart clenched. "But why me?"
Kael hesitated. "Because you are the last of that bloodline."
A heavy silence fell upon them. Lyra struggled to grasp the weight of his words. If what he said was true, she wasn't just a princess—she was something far more dangerous. More powerful.
Alden's hand moved to his sword hilt. "If she's so powerful, why has she shown no sign of this magic?"
Kael's expression darkened. "Because it has been locked away… sealed by a curse cast long before she was born."
Lyra's breath caught in her throat. A curse. It all made sense now—the mark, the strange whispers, the way her presence unsettled those around her.
"But," Kael continued, his voice grave, "the seal is breaking."
A sudden gust of wind howled through the library, snuffing out several candles. Shadows twisted along the walls, and the temperature plummeted. Lyra clutched her arms, a sharp pain searing through her mark.
A distant voice echoed through the chamber. "The stars awaken… the abyss stirs…"
Kael's gaze locked onto Lyra's. "The prophecy is unfolding. If you do not act soon, Eldoris will fall."
Lyra barely slept that night. Kael had revealed fragments of the prophecy, warning that the celestial mark was both a gift and a burden. It connected her to an ancient power, but it also made her a target. The darkness would seek her out, drawn to her light.
Dawn broke with an eerie stillness. As Lyra stepped into the training yard, she found Alden waiting for her, his sword already drawn.
"If Kael is right, you need to be ready," he said, tossing her a wooden practice blade.
She caught it easily, rolling her shoulders. "I won't go easy on you."
Alden smirked. "I wouldn't expect you to."
Their swords clashed, a familiar rhythm between them. But as they moved, something inside Lyra shifted. A strange awareness coursed through her, guiding her movements with unnatural precision. She sidestepped a strike before Alden had even committed to it, her instincts sharper than ever.
He stepped back, panting. "That mark of yours… it's waking up."
Before Lyra could respond, a horn blared from the castle walls. The gates burst open as a royal messenger sprinted toward them, his face pale with terror.
"Your Highness!" he gasped. "The kingdom is under attack."
Lyra stood frozen as the castle erupted into chaos. Bells rang, calling the guards to arms. Alden grabbed her wrist. "We need to get inside. Now."
She nodded, but her feet felt rooted to the ground. The sky above darkened unnaturally, storm clouds swirling despite the clear morning. From the horizon, a figure emerged—a cloaked being wreathed in shadows.
Kael rushed toward them, his face grim. "It's begun."
The figure raised a hand, and from the darkness, monstrous creatures emerged—warriors with hollow eyes and spectral weapons. Their presence sent a chill down Lyra's spine.
One by one, the castle guards fell. Lyra gritted her teeth. She could run. She could hide. But something deep within her refused.
The celestial mark burned bright on her arm. The whispers returned, louder this time. Do not fear the dark… become the light.
With a deep breath, she drew her blade.
And for the first time, the power within her answered.
