Rio and David raised their hands. But then, David signaled to Rio, and within seconds, they both sprinted out of the store.
Gunshots echoed as the police chased them.
Then—a bullet struck David's heart.
He collapsed onto the ground.
Rio immediately carried David on his back, sirens and flashing red-and-blue lights flooding the scene behind them. He ran as fast as he could, escaping to a distant place.
"David, David…! What's wrong? Talk to me! Hold on until I get you to a hospital!"
David gasped for breath, his body drenched in blood.
"Rio… I wish we had more time together… but I guess… this is my farewell…"
Tears streamed down Rio's face.
"No, David… please… hold on! Don't go like this!"
David, barely able to speak, whispered,
"Take me to Shadow… please…"
Rio carried David all the way back to the house, where Shadow and Leo were waiting. He gently placed David down in front of Shadow.
David looked up at me, his voice weak.
"Shadow… you've always had my back… but it looks like… my journey ends here. Take care of yourself, my dear friend."
Tears flooded my eyes.
"No… No, David… I lost my parents… I can't lose you too! Please… please hold on! I can't live without you, my friend!"
David, with a faint smile, whispered,
"I'll do everything… for my friend, man…"
His eyes slowly shut.
His breath stopped.
"David… David… NOOOOOOOOOOO!" I screamed, crying uncontrollably.
"I can't take this… I lost my parents as a child… and now I lost my best friend…"
"I will make that gang suffer. I will avenge David."
"This is all my fault… I'm the reason David is dead…"
We covered David's body with a white cloth. Then, Shadow, Rio, and Leo left the house.
Rio asked,
"What now, Shadow?"
With anger burning inside me, I replied,
"We're going to recruit new members for the gang… buy small weapons… and rob the central bank."
