Chapter Six: The Mark of the Forgotten
Elara and Liam stumbled away from the sealed door, their breaths coming in ragged gasps, their bodies trembling with the aftershocks of the encounter. The weight of what had just transpired, the terrifying glimpse into the unknown, pressed heavily on them, a suffocating blanket of dread. The forest was unnervingly silent, the usual chorus of night creatures absent, as if the very world was holding its breath, anticipating the next move in a game they didn’t understand.
Liam broke the oppressive silence, his voice a hushed whisper, “What now?”
Elara turned the key over in her hands, its metal cool and strangely pulsing beneath her fingers, a subtle vibration that seemed to resonate with the very air around them. “We find out what this unlocks.”
Liam exhaled sharply, a sound of exasperation and weary resignation. “You’re really set on this, aren’t you?”
