~SLOAN'S POV~
Our hands were still locked in a deal-sealing handshake and the air was still thick with tension as our gazes crashed against one another.
“I hope this marks the start of a wonderful, successful and peaceful journey between the two of us,” subtle authority laces his words and his eyes shimmered with hope when he mentioned the ‘peaceful’ and I didn't need a crystal ball to know what he was really hopeful for.
He hoped that there would be peace between the two of us or in other words, he hoped that I would keep my mouth shut and do exactly what he wanted me to do without consulting my conscience.
Only in your wildest dreams, fancy pants!
“If you think you can politely force me to submit to you then you have another thing coming. I'm a healer, your healer. Not your fan girl.”
The glee of emotion in his eyes fell to its death and a cold look darkened his forest green eyes as an intimidating aura oozed from his pores.
But I didn't back down. I will never back down because I am one hell of a crazy bitch.
As we were lost in the intensity of our staring contest, the sound of the doors banging against the wall reached our ears and the tension in the air melted as I turned to the door, expecting to find the two security bitches who treated me with so much disdain.
Except the man standing before me wasn't security bitch number one or number two. Hell, I'm sure he wasn't even a member of the staff.
Because no servant can look that good.
Shoulder–length brown hair sat on his head and a pair of hazel eyes stared into my soul with an intensity too strong for me to look away and yet soft enough to still be considered comfortable. Tattoos snaked his arms and his piercings glimmered in the lights of the room and the sweet scent of lavender reached my nostrils.
Jax Vance. Beta of the Axex pack. Second son and youngest child to the Vance family and brother to the douchebag who's now my employer. But this is a man I could be around.
But it seems I'm the only one in the room who thinks that way.
A heavy scowl sat on Trager's lips and he glared daggers at his brother.
“What are you doing here, Jax?”
The smile on Jax’s lips widened as the scowl on his brother's lips deepened and the two brothers who had nothing in common got tangled in a staring contest that was broken by Jax who spoke in a cool voice.
“What? Can't I come to see my brother and his…guest?”
I arched an eyebrow at his tone but he just overlooked my questioning look and sent a wink my way.
Real smooth.
“Hmm. You just always happen to want to see your brother when he is in a meeting that doesn't concern you or are you just annoyed that you weren't a part of the conversation? For all we know this could just be you throwing a silent tantrum.”
The smile on Jax’s lips faltered and a wave of an intense emotion flashed through his eyes but just before I could grasp its true nature, it was gone as quickly as it came and another dazzling smile was erected on his lips.
“Maybe if you weren't so stiff and uptight then you wouldn't see a friendly gesture from your brother and your beta as a tantrum.”
“And maybe if you were a more serious person then I would happily include you but sadly kindness isn't enough to overshadow playfulness.”
Jax ignored Trager's rude remarks and side-stepped him before making his way to me with that dazzling smile still plastered on his lips. He stopped just in front of me and his lavender scent invaded my nostrils.
“And who might you be, sweetheart?” he asked in a husky voice that sent shivers going up my spine and my wolf paced restlessly at the back of my mind.
“Why do you want to know, pretty boy?” I asked in a honey–laced voice and watched the smile in his face deepen.
“I want to know the beautiful woman locked alone in a room with my brother,” he leaned in till our noses touched and he held my hand up to his lips before planting a kiss onto my knuckles.
Surges of electricity shot up my arm from the point of contact and my heart pounded against my ribs.
All it took was a kiss to the back of my hand for my body to act like a little slut.
I wonder what else that mouth can do.
“She's Sloan Deveraux and I employed her,” Trager spoke with a sharp tone in his voice and I pulled my eyes away from Jax to notice the deep scowl on his lips.
Well, someone isn't amused by his brother's playfulness.
“A healer. Why do you need a healer, Trager? Is it because of your little problem?”
I snorted at Jax’s response and the scowl on his brother's face deepened as irritation darkened his eyes.
“I don't have a problem…”
Liar
“And my reason for employing her is none of your business. Now you know who she is, so stay away.”
“That's not the way it goes, brother…” he turned away from Trager and stared back into my eyes.
“I want us to get to know each other properly or wouldn't you like to know me too, Sloan?” he asked in a dangerously low voice and if I thought my wolf was restless before then I certainly didn't know any better.
He could be a good distraction. Something to keep me preoccupied till the virgin Alpha can get his act together.
A sly smile crept onto my lips before I closed the distance between us and placed a kiss on Jax’s cheek.
His eyes widened to the size of saucers and I didn't have to look at his brother to know that his jaw must be sweeping the floor.
They haven't seen a woman who has enough balls to make a move on Jax Vance.
“We'll just have to wait and see now won't we?”
But now they have and I plan to show them just how many surprises I have up my sleeve.
