The Unexpected Variable

Let's first look at the cold, hard facts. Angela Murphy was the most popular girl in high school. Every boy dreamed of dating her, and every girl dreamed of being like her. Her long, platinum blonde hair, slim waist, and symmetrical face made her a beauty. Despite all this, her world was never just about appearances; she was down to earth and stood up for her peers. It's no wonder she became the class president. And it's no surprise that a good relationship developed between Felicity and her. Angela had been the main character in several of Felicity's fortune distributions. An approving compliment from Angela – the main plot of many fortunes she gave away – and each time, it was a huge success.

Felicity stared at Angela with wide eyes now, who was clearly showing signs that Claude wasn't just some handsome face to her.

Felicity didn't think too much about it because fate had guided her, and it had never led her astray, had it? Angela liked Claude, and this was the sign she had been waiting for since morning. She was sure that this sign had appeared because Claude's feelings for Angela were also similar. Besides, who wouldn't feel completely lucky if Angela Murphy herself confessed her love to them?

The literature class began, and Claude slipped into the room at the last possible second of the break. He glanced back at Felicity, who only briefly looked up from her phone, with a suspiciously triumphant grin on her face, which didn't fade even when she met Claude's expressionless face.

Now everything will be fine, my friend, I'll give you the greatest luck in the world – she thought to herself and sank back into her phone.

Claude couldn't make sense of the scene and tried to glance back at her over his shoulder at least three more times, but only briefly, so the teacher wouldn't notice. Felicity kept grinning and typing.

A wave of relief swept over Felicity. Finally, she could put an end to this matter, and after lunch, she could draw the next day's lucky person. What an absurdity it had been to doubt whether she could manage this task; she should have believed in herself more.

She glanced at Angela, who was already showing the signs of her hypnosis. Her eyes were fixed on Claude, and she couldn't take them off him. Her gaze was filled with determination. As soon as the bell rang, she jumped from her seat, leaving her belongings behind, and confidently walked over to Claude, who was packing his things into his bag. Felicity rested her chin on her hand and watched the scene. Now she just had to watch the fruits of her labor unfold.

Angela and Claude looked great together. Two tall people, the platinum blonde beauty, and the handsome, dark-haired bad boy. Today, they would be the school's power couple, and Felicity had written it all herself. The noise of people leaving the classroom made it impossible for her to hear anything, but what she saw satisfied her. Angela spoke to Claude and said something, to which he nodded in agreement. Angela's face lit up, and she bid Claude goodbye. She quickly returned to her desk for her things, muttering excitedly:

"What the hell is wrong with me?"

Claude looked back at Felicity one last time, who, equally flustered, waved as though they had always been friends.

In her next class, neither Angela nor Claude were present, so she waited with unbearable excitement for the end. When the bell rang, she jumped up and ran, grabbing all her things, to the music room on the top floor. She had planned everything. She would camp behind the door with her lunch and leave it slightly open to hear everything, ensuring she could confirm the luck's occurrence.

When she sat on the floor, holding her sandwich and drink, she heard light footsteps in the hallway. The steps stopped in front of the room. A few moments later, heavier footsteps followed, also stopping when they reached the door. The door creaked slightly wider, as someone made sure they were standing in front of an empty room.

"Let's hear it." said Claude's voice firmly.

Angela didn't start immediately, perhaps intimidated by his calm authority. Felicity dropped her sandwich in her lap.

Let's hear it? Who dares to say that to Angela Murphy?

"Uh… I just…" – Angela took a deep breath – "Listen, I've liked you since the beginning of the year, and I want you to know. Please don't ask me why I'm saying this here and now when I haven't shown any signs before; I don't even know what got into me. Well, I think I do… when I saw how friendly you were with Felicity today, I realised how different you are to those who are closer to you. And I got a little… jealous… that it wasn't me."

Felicity listened while holding her breath. What the hell? Although this was a logical development, given everything that had happened before, the fact that it caused negative feelings in Angela was completely incomprehensible. Her luck should have prevented this from happening.

"Always about Felicity" Claude remarked sarcastically.

Why am I the topic? – Felicity dropped her head to her knees. She didn't like how this conversation was turning. The app notification flashed next to her, on her phone lying on the ground.
