Liam had always been an observant child.
Even when he was younger, Camille had learned that nothing slipped past him for long. He noticed the way people spoke, the way they hesitated before answering difficult questions, the way emotions flickered across their faces even when they tried to hide them.
And now, he was noticing her.
Noticing the way she had been acting differently ever since Dominic Hayes showed up in Haven Cove.
She could feel it in the way he watched her, the way his curious brown eyes—so much like his—lingered just a little too long when she seemed lost in thought. The way he seemed to be piecing something together, though he hadn't voiced it yet.
It was only a matter of time before he did.
"Mom?"
Camille glanced up from the kitchen counter, where she had been absently wiping the same spot over and over. Liam was sitting at the dining table, textbook open in front of him, but his pencil had stilled in his hand.
She forced a smile. "Yeah, baby?"
Liam hesitated, then set his pencil down. "That guy from the café… Dominic."
Her stomach tightened. "What about him?"
Liam studied her, his fingers drumming lightly against the table. "You know him, don't you?"
Camille's pulse quickened. She had known this was coming.
She set the dishcloth down carefully, keeping her tone even. "I used to."
Liam's brows furrowed. "Like… a long time ago?"
"Yes."
Liam was quiet for a moment, as if turning something over in his head. "Did you like him?"
The question hit her harder than she expected.
Did she like him?
Once, she had loved him. More than she had ever thought possible. But that wasn't what Liam was asking.
She exhaled. "We were close. A long time ago."
Liam studied her, then tilted his head. "Then why does it seem like you don't want to see him now?"
Camille hesitated. "Because sometimes, when people leave your life, it's better to keep things that way."
Liam frowned. "But he came back."
And that was the problem, wasn't it?
Dominic had come back. And no matter how much Camille wanted to pretend it didn't change anything, it did.
She swallowed and walked over to ruffle Liam's hair, offering a small smile. "You've got homework to finish, detective."
Liam gave her a look but picked up his pencil again.
She turned away before he could see the worry in her eyes.
Because Liam was starting to ask questions.
And soon, he would ask the one she feared most.
