The trial of eternity

The world around Ochi shattered, falling away like shattered glass. Each fragment of reality twisted into itself, folding in a chaotic dance that pulled him deeper into the void. His body was weightless, yet every muscle screamed, as though his very being was being torn apart and rebuilt at the same time.

The words of the cloaked figure echoed in his mind, a constant, maddening refrain: "The price of defying time is not death, but eternal torment." The thought rattled around in his skull, refusing to leave. It was a chilling promise, one he couldn't afford to ignore. But he had no choice. He couldn't allow it to control him. Not now.

"I will survive," Ochi muttered to himself, his voice hoarse but resolute.

The crushing sensation of falling slowed, and the weightlessness gave way to the feeling of solid ground beneath his feet once again. His body snapped back into existence with a sharp breath, and he staggered, barely managing to stay upright. The pain that had been so constant in his life—his wounds, his exhaustion, the weight of the power that had surged through him—seemed to recede, leaving him with only an intense, burning hunger. Hunger for something. Something he could not name, but something that felt as though it were connected to the reason he had started all this.

A low, grinding sound cut through the air, followed by a loud snap. Ochi's eyes snapped to the source, his heart pounding in his chest.

Before him stood a massive stone gate—carved from what looked like obsidian and pulsing with a dark, unnatural energy. It loomed over him, towering high above, seemingly endless. It was a threshold, an entrance to whatever this place was. This was not some random wasteland or dimension. It was something far worse—something that belonged to the very heart of time.

And beyond it… something moved. A faint shadow shifted, barely visible at first. Ochi felt a chill crawl down his spine, the feeling of being watched, judged. The gate was not just an entrance; it was a test. A trial. The weight of it pressed on him, a suffocating reminder of everything he had put on the line.

"Survive, and you will have the chance to redeem your soul," a voice rasped from the shadows beyond the gate. It was cold, hollow, with an echo of something long lost.

Ochi's eyes narrowed, stepping forward as if compelled by the voice. "What do you want from me?" he demanded, his voice shaking from both exhaustion and something far more primal—fear.

"Nothing," the voice responded, filled with disdain. "But you will want something from me, won't you?"

Ochi felt the blood drain from his face. That phrase… It wasn't just a question; it was a threat. This wasn't a place for compassion. It was a place that tested every part of him—his desires, his very will.

He had made a choice. A terrible, irrevocable choice. And now, it seemed, there was no escaping it.

The stone gate creaked open, its massive doors grinding slowly, reluctantly, as if they, too, were bound by the curse of time. From the dark void within, a blinding light shone—a light far more intense than anything Ochi had felt before. It wasn't just light; it was an energy, a presence, a force that beckoned him forward.

And at the center of that light, there was a figure. A woman. Her features were obscured at first, but as the light began to dim, she came into focus. A long cloak, flowing like the wind itself. Her eyes, deep pools of light, stared directly at him. She was no ordinary person—no, she was something more.

The sensation of familiarity hit Ochi like a punch to the gut. His chest tightened, a flicker of recognition flaring in his heart.

"Reina?"

Her name escaped his lips in a breathless whisper.

The woman—Reina—tilted her head slightly, her expression unreadable. But her eyes… those eyes were filled with something Ochi couldn't decipher—something that was at once welcoming and terribly distant.

"You have arrived," she said, her voice echoing in his mind, pulling at his very soul. "But are you truly ready for what lies beyond this door?"

His pulse raced. "What lies beyond? What are you talking about? You know why I'm here." The words came out in a rush, his desperation spilling over.

"You seek your family, Ochi Nakagura," she replied, her voice growing softer, tinged with an emotion he couldn't place. "But the price of such a desire is more than you could ever imagine."

The ground beneath Ochi trembled slightly, as though the very fabric of reality itself was protesting his words. His heart skipped, his entire being thrumming with the gravity of her statement. Was this… Was this really Reina? Or was this just some trick, some illusion?

He took a step forward, despite the nagging doubt in his mind, his body instinctively reaching out toward the woman—his family.

"What do I have to do to bring them back? What price do I have to pay?" His voice cracked with desperation, but his resolve never wavered. He would do anything.

The figure—the woman who appeared to be Reina—paused, studying him intently. "The price has already been set," she said, her voice echoing with a deep sadness. "But the question remains: what will you sacrifice? And how much of yourself will you give to turn back the tide of fate?"

Ochi stood motionless, the weight of her words sinking in. "Anything," he whispered, his breath heavy with the weight of the truth. "I'll give anything."

The woman's expression softened, and her eyes shimmered with a sadness that made Ochi's heart ache. She slowly raised her hand toward him, her fingers glowing with an ethereal energy.

"Then take it," she said quietly, as the ground beneath them began to tremble once more.

The gates to the unknown opened wide, and Ochi stepped forward into the light, into the unknown, prepared to face whatever trial awaited him.
