Chapter 3

[MAVERICK]

"No." Maverick simply said.

"What do you mean no?"

"It's not that simple, Dad. I can't just turn it on and off. "

Don drew his chair back out noisily and began to walk slowly to the front of his desk.

"Son, there is something inside you, and it is a weapon, and you need to know how to use it before it eats you and all of us up one day." Don said with folded hands.

Maverick wanted to roll his eyes. Not this again. He knew his father-stepfather- was right in a way. But he also knew that Don didn't just see him as someone who needed to figure out himself. He also saw him as a weapon. A toll that will be under his control for the sake of his organisation and his power. Even if Mav knew how to turn into this Wolf, his father said he was. He didn't think he would do it. Not for him anyway.

"If I am as dangerous as you say, if what's inside me is as fearful as you say, why isn't everyone running?"

"Are you stupid? That's because they don't know, son. They don't know what I know."

"They've seen my power...my strength? My weird eye colour at night? The way I don't need any form of aid to see at night?"

"And they fear you."

"They respect me, Dad."

"And fear you. Do you know what they call you?"

What did they call him? Mav's left eyebrow raised.

"The Jade Killer."

"What?" Mav scoffed. Feeling embarrassed, he turned around.

"It's nothing to be ashamed of. But you know what I call you? Lupus Viridis."

"Wow... you have a name for me, too. Okay!"

"Green Wolf." Don nodded his head and began to reminisce. "I will never forget that fateful day fifteen years ago. My beautiful Elina and I, driving down that road that night and hitting an animal...a creature."

Maverick scoffed at the way he said the 'animal.' It wasn't with disgust, but with a certain kind of awe. "Elina burst out, pleading with me to rescue the creature. As we approached, I was shocked to see a frail wolf cub transforming into a human before our very eyes. But it seemed the transformation came at a cost - the cub's eyes rolled back, and it crumpled to the ground, lifeless."

Maverick leaned back. The story of how he was found still awed him. "You tell me all the time, Dad."

"It was a miraculous sight!" Don said, cupping Maverick's face and looking him dead in the eyes.

"I don't remember any of it. If it's so unforgettable, why don't I know? Why can't I... remember?"

"You were nothing but a tiny child then. An infant."

Maverick closed his eyes and sighed. "I keep trying. I feel the hunger. The need to...feed. Blood. Bones. Meat. Live meat..."

"Mmm," Don grumbled. "That's why I sent you out there tonight. "

"You shouldn't have sent me with the men then."

"I didn't. I asked you to go. You took your men." Don said, and Maverick's eyes opened in feigned realisation. He knew what he did. He was smarter than that, and Don knew.

To an extent, he was afraid to himself. Of what he would be when he is alone and free to unravel himself. He was afraid of the monster in him.

"I see the fear in your eyes. But you need to satisfy your hunger before it eats you. We don't want history to repeat itself." Don said, leaving him now and going back to seat at the desk. They very well knew of the 'history' Don referred to, and Maverick immediately threw that thought beyond the back of his head.

"You are your brother's protector. You are protector of this entire legacy. How can you protect when you are afraid of yourself?"

Maverick, on hearing this, felt a certain churn inside of him. He nodded his head in understanding to his father and headed for the door once again, and out of the premises of Hell Hotel.
