The night was thick with mist, curling around the alleyways like ghostly tendrils. Liam pulled the hood of his cloak lower, keeping his face hidden as he followed Ileana through the slums of Ardentia. Iris moved at his side, her steps light, barely making a sound. The streets were quieter than usual—too quiet.
Liam could feel it. Tension. Watchful eyes. The city was hunting him.
Every corner they turned, every shadow they passed, he expected an enforcer to step out, blade drawn. But Ileana moved with confidence, leading them deeper into the underbelly of Ardentia, where the patrols wouldn't dare to tread.
"You sure about this?" Iris whispered. "If Valen's got people everywhere, the slums aren't exactly safe either."
Ileana didn't look back. "That's why we're going through the old tunnels."
Liam frowned. "Tunnels?"
Ileana glanced at him over her shoulder, her grin sharp. "You think the noble bastards up top care about the filth underneath? These tunnels were part of the old city before Ardentia was rebuilt. They lead all over—smuggler routes, forgotten vaults, and places even the enforcers don't go."
Liam didn't like the sound of that. "Why?"
Ileana's grin faded. "Because some doors were never meant to be reopened."
That sent a chill down Liam's spine, but he didn't press further. He had no choice but to trust her.
They reached an old warehouse, its wooden beams rotting, the walls covered in faded sigils—wards meant to keep intruders out. Ileana traced a symbol with her fingertip, muttering something under her breath.
The sigils flickered, then faded.
She pushed the door open, revealing a staircase leading down into darkness. A damp, stale smell wafted up.
"This is it," she said.
Liam hesitated for only a second before stepping inside.

Beneath Ardentia
The tunnels were ancient. The walls, made of rough stone, were covered in carvings, most of them eroded by time. Some depicted scenes of old battles, others—something stranger. Figures wielding ink.
Liam's breath caught. Architects.
He ran his fingers over the faded carvings. The brush strokes, though weathered, were unmistakable.
"These tunnels belonged to the Architects," he murmured.
Iris shot him a look. "You sure?"
Liam nodded. This wasn't a coincidence.
Something pulled at him here—a whisper of the past.
Ileana kept moving. "Keep up. We're not the only ones down here."
That snapped Liam out of his thoughts. "What do you mean?"
Ileana exhaled sharply. "I mean the Graveyard isn't the only dangerous place. These tunnels? They're infested."
Iris groaned. "Infested with what, exactly?"
Ileana didn't answer immediately. Then—"Shades."
Liam felt the word settle into his bones.
Shades.
He'd heard of them. Spirits twisted by magic, lingering in the dark places of the world. Restless. Hungry.
Iris let out a slow breath. "And you thought this was a good idea?"
"Unless you want to waltz through the city and straight into Valen's lap, then yes, this is still the best option."
Iris muttered a curse but didn't argue.
Liam gripped his brush. His ink pulsed, responding to his tension.
The deeper they went, the colder the air became. The mist thickened, unnatural in the underground space.
Then—
A whisper.
Soft. Almost human.
Liam stopped.
He turned his head slowly.
In the distance, just beyond the flickering light of Ileana's lantern—a figure stood in the tunnel.
Pale. Motionless. Featureless.
A Shade.
Liam's breath hitched.
The figure twitched.
Then it moved.
Faster than any living thing should.
Straight for them.
