The Shifting Ruins

The rumbling deepened, vibrating through the ancient stone walls like a warning. Dust and loose debris rained down from the ceiling, and for a brief, chilling moment, Liam feared the entire tunnel would collapse on top of them.

Iris's grip on her dagger tightened. "Tell me that's not what I think it is."

Ileana pressed a hand to the ground, her expression shifting from curiosity to alarm. "It's not just a cave-in," she murmured. "Something is… moving beneath us."

Liam's blood ran cold. The ruins weren't just old structures. They were part of something alive.

The Hollow Sentinel hadn't been a simple guardian. It had been a gatekeeper.

And now, the gate was opening.

The Descent Begins

The tunnel floor lurched, tilting sharply beneath them. Iris cursed as she stumbled, catching herself against the wall. Liam threw out his brush, dragging a stabilizing rune across the stone, but it barely held against the shifting ground.

Ileana, ever the survivalist, was already moving. "We need to go. Now."

Liam barely managed a nod before the floor beneath them cracked apart.

Gravity betrayed them.

The stone split open, and the three of them plummeted into the abyss below.

The world became a blur of darkness, falling debris, and rushing wind. Liam's instincts screamed at him to do something, but before he could react—

They hit the water.

A City Forgotten

The impact stole the breath from Liam's lungs. The cold swallowed him whole, dragging him into the unknown depths.

For a terrifying second, there was nothing but darkness—a suffocating void that pulled him down, down, down.

Then—light.

Faint. Flickering.

Liam forced his body to move, kicking upward, breaking through the water's surface with a gasping breath.

A few feet away, Iris surfaced, coughing violently. Ileana wasn't far behind, her soaked hood clinging to her face as she scanned their surroundings.

And what they saw stole their breath.

Beneath the ruins, hidden away from the world above, was a sunken city.

Colossal stone structures stretched into the distance, half-submerged in the vast underground lake. Bridges, broken but still standing, crisscrossed above them, leading to what looked like a central fortress carved into the cavern walls.

Faint blue lights hovered in the air like lost souls, illuminating the ruins in an eerie glow.

Liam's heart pounded.

This wasn't just another ruin.

This was an architect's city.

Unseen Eyes

"We need to move," Ileana said, her voice low. "We're not alone here."

Liam followed her gaze, and his stomach twisted.

Beyond the ruins, past the shifting water and broken pillars, figures moved.

Not just one. Not just a few.

Dozens. Maybe hundreds.

They weren't Hollow Sentinels.

They were something worse.
