The temple's collapse had left the group battered and covered in dust, but they had no time to rest. The artifact pulsed faintly in Kael's hands, its light casting eerie shadows on their faces as they pressed forward. The path ahead was narrow, winding deeper into the earth, and the air grew colder with every step. Aurelia shivered, though she tried to hide it with a joke.
"You know, if I'd known this was going to be a spelunking trip, I would've brought a sweater. And maybe a snack. Anyone got a snack?"
Selene, walking ahead, glanced back at her. "This isn't the time, Aurelia. We need to stay focused."
"Oh, I'm focused," Aurelia shot back. "Focused on how much I hate this place. Seriously, who designs these tunnels? Claustrophobics need not apply."
Kael, his staff glowing faintly to light the way, ignored their bickering. His eyes were fixed on the path ahead, his expression grim. "We're close. I can feel it."
"Feel what?" Aurelia asked. "The crushing weight of impending doom? Because I'm feeling that too."
Before Kael could respond, the tunnel opened into a massive cavern. The ceiling stretched high above them, disappearing into darkness, and the walls were lined with more of the strange runes they'd seen in the temple. But what caught their attention was the creature standing in the center of the cavern.
It was massive, easily three times the size of the stone guardians they'd fought earlier. Its body was covered in thick, armored scales, and its eyes glowed with the same eerie light as the artifact. It let out a low, rumbling growl that shook the ground beneath their feet.
"Well," Aurelia said, drawing her daggers. "That's not good."
Kael stepped forward, his staff raised. "This is the guardian. The final test."
"Final test?" Aurelia repeated. "What is this, a pop quiz? Because I didn't study."
The guardian roared, charging at them with surprising speed. Kael and Selene scattered, but Aurelia stood her ground, her daggers flashing as she met the creature head-on. She dodged its massive claws, striking at its legs, but her blades barely scratched its armor.
"Okay," she muttered, ducking under another swing. "New plan. Anyone got a bigger sword?"
Kael blasted the creature with a burst of magic, but it barely slowed it down. Selene summoned vines to entangle its legs, but the guardian tore through them with ease.
"We need to work together!" Kael shouted. "Aurelia, distract it!"
"Distract it?" she yelled back. "With what? My sparkling personality?"
Despite her protests, she darted around the creature, waving her arms and shouting. "Hey, ugly! Over here! Yeah, you! Bet you can't catch me!"
The guardian turned its massive head, its glowing eyes locking onto her. Aurelia grinned. "That's right. Follow the shiny thing."
As the creature lunged at her, Kael and Selene attacked from behind. Kael's magic struck its back, while Selene's vines wrapped around its legs, slowing it down. Aurelia darted between its legs, striking at its underbelly, but her daggers still couldn't pierce its armor.
"This isn't working!" she shouted. "We need a new plan!"
Kael's eyes narrowed as he studied the creature. "Its eyes. They're the weak point."
"Great," Aurelia said, dodging another swing. "Anyone got a ladder?"
Selene summoned a thick vine, lifting Aurelia into the air. "Go for the eyes!"
Aurelia hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay. But if I die, I'm haunting both of you."
She leapt from the vine, daggers raised, and plunged them into the creature's glowing eyes. It let out a deafening roar, thrashing wildly, but Aurelia held on, driving her blades deeper.
Finally, the creature collapsed, its massive body shaking the ground as it fell. Aurelia jumped clear, landing in a crouch. "And that's how it's done."
Kael and Selene joined her, their expressions a mix of relief and exhaustion. "Good work," Kael said.
"Yeah, yeah," Aurelia muttered, brushing herself off. "Just add it to my list of heroic deeds. Right next to 'survived another day without coffee.'"
But as they turned to leave the cavern, Aurelia hesitated. For a moment, she thought she heard something—a faint whisper, like a voice calling her name. She shook her head, trying to clear it.
"You okay?" Selene asked, noticing her hesitation.
"Yeah," Aurelia said, forcing a smile. "Just… thought I heard something. Probably just the wind. Or my imagination. Or both."
But as they continued on, the whisper lingered in the back of her mind, faint but insistent. And for the first time, Aurelia felt a flicker of unease—a sense that something was wrong, though she couldn't quite put her finger on what.
