The shard's whispers became a roar.
Kael's body moved without his consent—muscles coiling, corrupted arm outstretched like a blade. The Original backpedaled, her stolen golden light flickering unevenly.
"You don't understand what you're doing," she hissed.
He didn't. But the shard did.
Black veins erupted across Kael's face as the shard pulsed violently, cracking his sternum with an audible snap. Agony blinded him—yet his hand kept moving, fingers splaying toward the Original's chest.
Aurelia's weak cry cut through the haze: "Stop him!"
Lucian moved in a blur of shadows, his remaining sword flashing—
—only for Kael's corrupted arm to whip out, catching the blade mid-air. Black tendrils sprouted from his flesh, wrapping around the steel. It rusted to dust in seconds.
The Original seized her chance. She lunged at Aurelia.
Kael's body reacted faster.
He twisted.
Space itself warped as his palm struck the Original's shoulder. Where they touched, her form unraveled—golden light and shadow peeling away like layers of rotten skin.
She screamed.
So did Kael.
The shard was eating him alive, burning through muscle and bone to reach her. His vision swam with fragmented memories not his own:
The Original crafting the first shard from her own ribs
A younger Lucian plunging it into a radiant Aurelia's back
A betrayal older than time
The Original wrenched free, her left arm now missing, dissolved into motes of light. "You wretched—"
Kael collapsed, his body convulsing. The corruption had reached his heart. He could feel the shard's roots threading through his organs, whispering:
One more touch. That's all we need.
Lucian hauled him upright. "Fight it, damn you!"
Kael choked on blood. "Can't... stop..."
Across the crater, Aurelia dragged herself toward them, her wound still weeping light. "The Crown," she gasped. "Use it... on him."
The Original laughed, her form already reforming. "Yes, Vladimir. Do it. Let the Crown consume another fool."
Lucian's grip tightened. The Crown of Shadows pulsed violently.
Kael saw the decision in his eyes.
Then—
Darkness swallowed him whole.
