Ben's grief twisted into rage.
His tears hadn't even dried, yet the thing inside Ellie's body smirked at him, wearing her face like a cruel mask. It wasn't her—it could never be her. But it moved like her, breathed like her, taunting him with the illusion that she was still there.
And it made him sick.
"This is your fault." His voice was low, shaking with barely contained fury.
The thing inside Ellie raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence. "My fault?"
Ben shot up from his knees, towering over the imposter. "If you hadn't forced her into this—if you hadn't made her do this damn ritual—Ellie would still be here!"
The thing laughed, a soft, musical sound that wasn't Ellie's. "Oh, Ben." it took a step closer, tilting its head. "You're still pretending you had no part in this?"
His hands fisted at his sides. "Shut up."
"You left Victoria to die, remember?" The thing's voice was mocking, but there was something dark underneath it, something ancient and vengeful. "Everything happening right now? It's just the universe balancing the scales."
Ben's jaw clenched. "That was a mistake. A horrible mistake—"
"One that cost her life."The thing grinned, but its eyes were dead cold. "Now, Ellie has paid the price for your sins. How does it feel, Ben? To be the reason every woman you love is doomed?"
Ben's vision blurred with fury. "Stop talking like that. Stop using her voice."
"Why?" The thing took another step, its fingers brushing against his chest. "Afraid you might like it?"
He snapped.
Grabbing the thing's wrist, he shoved it back, causing it to stumble. "I will never love you." His voice was sharp, venomous. "You are NOT Ellie, and you will never be her!"
The thing's smirk faltered, just for a second.
Then, its face hardened. "You still don't get it, do you?" It took slow, deliberate steps toward him. "This isn't just about Ellie. It was always about you, Ben. You destroy everything you touch. And now, you're alone again."
Ben's breath hitched.
Alone.
The word sank in, cutting deeper than any blade.
He had been alone before. After Victoria. He had barely survived it. Then Ellie had come, dragging him back into the light.
And now, she was gone.
Because of him.
The weight of it all crushed him, leaving him breathless.
Maybe the thing was right. Maybe he was cursed. Maybe he did destroy everything he touched.
And worst of all?
Maybe he deserved it.
