Chapter 56: The Trapped Soul

Ellie opened her eyes—but there was nothing to see.

Just darkness.

Thick. Endless. Suffocating.

She turned her head, but no matter where she looked, there was only an empty void stretching infinitely in all directions. It was as if she was floating in a black abyss, weightless yet crushingly confined, like something unseen was pressing in on her from all sides.

Her breath quickened.

Where am I?

She tried to move, but her limbs felt numb, like they weren't even attached to her body. Panic slithered into her chest, coiling tight around her racing heart.

"Hello?!" she called out.

Her voice didn't echo. It just… vanished.

Like the darkness had swallowed it whole.

She clutched her head, trying to remember. The last thing she knew… she was with Ben. Fighting for him. Fighting against Victoria. Against the thing that had possessed her body.

Her body.

Her stomach dropped.

She wasn't in it anymore.

She wasn't… anywhere.

The realization hit her like ice water, sending a violent shiver through her soul.

"No… no, no, no, this isn't happening," she whispered, her voice shaky. She forced herself to breathe, to think. There had to be a way out. There had to be.

She turned, desperate to find anything—a light, a door, a sign that she wasn't just floating in an endless pit of nothingness.

Then… she heard it.

A whisper.

Soft. Distant.

Her blood turned cold.

She spun around, heart pounding against her ribs.

Another whisper.

This time, closer.

"Ellie…"

Her breath caught in her throat.

The voice was familiar.

And then, out of the blackness, something moved.

A shadow—not just part of the void, but shifting, alive.

Ellie took a step back, stumbling.

The whisper came again, only this time it wasn't distant.

It was right behind her.

"Ellie…"

She whirled around, and her stomach plummeted.

A figure stood before her.

No eyes. No mouth. Just a hollow, empty void where a face should be.

Ellie tried to scream, but before she could—

It lunged.
