Chapter 73: A War Within

The thing inside Ellie's body stiffened. For the first time since this nightmare began, Ben saw something other than amusement in her expression.

She knew.

She knew that he remembered.

Ben's heart pounded like a war drum in his chest. His hands, still gripping her waist, trembled with a mix of fury and fear.

"Who are you?" His voice was low, steady, dangerous.

The imposter smirked, but it wasn't as effortless as before. There was something forced behind it now—an edge of desperation.

"You already know the answer, Ben." Her fingers traced his jaw, her nails pressing just hard enough to sting. "Why ask questions when you won't like the truth?"

Ben gritted his teeth, his grip tightening. "Where is Ellie?"

The thing inside Ellie's body tilted her head, as if considering whether or not to humor him.

Then she leaned in, her lips just inches from his ear.

"Somewhere you can't reach her."

A cold shiver raced down Ben's spine, but he refused to let it show. He forced himself to hold her gaze, his eyes burning with defiance.

"You think you can keep this up forever?" he demanded. "You think you can just take her place?"

The imposter let out a soft, eerie laugh.

"Why not?" she whispered. "I've already erased Victoria. And soon, Ellie will be nothing but a fading echo in your mind."

Ben's breath caught in his throat.

No.

No, that wasn't true.

Ellie was fighting.

Somewhere out there, she was fighting.

And if she was still fighting, then so would he.

Ben forced himself to stay calm, to think. If Ellie was trapped, then she needed a way back. And if Victoria had been erased...

Had she really been destroyed?

Or was she trapped too?

Ben had no idea how to bring them back. No idea what he was up against.

But he knew one thing.

He wasn't going to lose Ellie.

He wasn't going to let this thing win.

Even if it killed him.

The imposter sighed, pulling back slightly. "You're thinking too much, Ben," she murmured, her fingers trailing down his chest. "Let go. Accept me."

Ben's jaw clenched.

Not a chance.

But he wasn't ready to strike—not yet.

So instead, he did something reckless.

Something that made the thing inside Ellie freeze.

He smirked.

"Sure," he said smoothly, his voice laced with false surrender. "If you want me to accept you…"

He lifted a hand, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

"…Then prove you're real."

The imposter's breath hitched.

For the first time, Ben saw it—the flicker of doubt in her stolen eyes.

She knew what he was doing.

And she didn't like it.

Because deep down, no matter how strong she was…

She was still just an invader in someone else's skin.

And Ben was about to tear her world apart.
