Chapter 75: The Fight for Return

Ellie's breath came fast and shallow, her fists clenched at her sides. The void trembled around her, resisting her presence, trying to suffocate her very existence.

"You don't belong here," the shadowy figure rasped again, its voice slithering through the emptiness.

Ellie narrowed her eyes. "Then let me go."

"It's not that simple."

The air thickened, pressing against her like an invisible force, making it harder to move, harder to think.

Ellie fought against it.

Her mind raced. If this thing—the void, the presence, whatever it was—wanted her gone, why was it warning her? Why was it hesitating?

She took another step forward, defying the pressure trying to crush her into nothingness.

"I don't care what it takes," she spat. "I am going back."

The shadow pulsed, shifting unnaturally.

"And what will you return to?"

Ellie's jaw tightened. "My life. My body. Ben."

The shadow stilled. Then, a soft, cruel chuckle echoed around her.

"Your body is not yours anymore."

Ellie's pulse spiked.

"It has settled in," the voice continued, almost amused. "Woven itself into your skin, your bones. Even if you return, you will not be whole. It will fight you. You will suffer."

Ellie refused to let the doubt sink in.

Let it fight. Let her suffer.

She would take back what was hers.

"Then I'll tear it out," she said through gritted teeth. "Piece by piece, if I have to."

The void trembled, like it could feel the fire growing inside her.

Then, something shifted.

A low hum vibrated through the darkness, and suddenly, cracks of dim, silvery light formed beneath Ellie's feet.

She gasped.

For the first time, the void was breaking.

The shadow recoiled, shrinking back. Afraid.

Ellie felt her heart race with hope.

"If you leave now," the shadow rasped, "there will be no turning back. The path will close."

Ellie didn't hesitate. "Then I'll make my own way back."

The light beneath her feet spread, widening, splitting the void apart.

And then—

The darkness collapsed.

Ellie screamed as she was yanked downward, through the rift, through time and space, through something she couldn't comprehend—

And then—

Silence.

She was falling.

The last thing she heard before everything turned white was the whisper of the void.

"Then let's see if you are strong enough to survive."
