Julianne woke up to the soft chirping of birds outside her window. The warmth of the morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a golden glow across her small room.
She stretched, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, but her mind was still stuck on last night.
The way Adrian had looked at her.
Not with anger. Not with his usual coldness.
But with something else.
Something that made her chest tighten.
She shook her head, pushing the thought aside. It didn't matter. He was still the same distant, untouchable man. She was just a cook in his house.
Breakfast with a Silent Audience
By the time Julianne entered the kitchen, Mrs. Collins was already bustling around, instructing the other staff. The older woman shot her a glance but said nothing as Julianne got to work.
She prepared a simple but elegant breakfast—scrambled eggs with herbs, buttered toast, and fresh fruit. For Liam, she made tiny animal-shaped pancakes, hoping to coax another smile out of him.
At exactly 8 AM, Adrian and Liam entered the dining hall.
Adrian, dressed in yet another sharp suit, barely spared her a glance as he sat down.
Liam, on the other hand, hesitated before climbing into his chair.
Julianne placed his plate in front of him, smiling. "Good morning, sweetheart."
Liam's lips twitched slightly. "Morning."
She turned to leave, but before she could, a deep voice stopped her.
"You eat with us."
Julianne blinked, startled.
Adrian hadn't looked up from his plate, but his words hung in the air, commanding and firm.
Mrs. Collins, standing nearby, stiffened. The other house staff exchanged surprised glances.
Julianne hesitated. "Sir?"
Adrian's eyes finally met hers. Dark. Intense. "You're part of this household now, aren't you?"
Her heart pounded. Was this a test? A challenge?
Liam's gaze flickered between them, uncertainty in his small face.
Julianne exhaled and carefully sat across from Liam, feeling the weight of Adrian's presence.
For the first time, she wasn't just a cook standing in the background.
She was at the table.
And something told her that changed everything.
