Chapter 9.1: The First Warning

They didn't stop running until they reached the bottom of the hill, their breaths coming in ragged gasps. Elena leaned against a tree, her heart racing as she tried to make sense of what she had seen.

"What was that?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Daniel shook his head. "I don't know. But it wasn't human."

Elena's stomach churned. "You think it's connected to the Gathering? To whatever Mara found?"

"I don't know," Daniel said again, his voice tight. "But we're not going back there. Not without a plan."

Elena nodded, though the fear still clung to her like a second skin. She thought of the journal, of the symbols, of the figure in the shadows. Mara had known something—something dangerous. And now, whatever it was, it knew about her too.
