Chapter 49: Bones.

NEXT TO NIGEL, Pete awakened with a start. Nigel knew it even with his eyes closed. His tentacles, which had somehow found their way around the alien in the dark, let go. Nigel sensed everything about the royal, despite missing that particular limb. All night, he’d been unconsciously tuned into the royal, listening to him sleep. Mostly, Nigel had dozed, wrestling with an unnatural, persistent urge to protect the silly sod.

The alien squirmed, a restless shift.

“It’s safe,” Nigel muttered, his voice still thick with sleep. “You can use the dunny.”

“Dunny?” Pete’s voice was groggy, confused.

“Oi, it’s safe to piss.”

“Thank you, Professor Nigel.” Pete offered a huge exhale from his nose, a sound of profound relief, and Nigel heard the tent flaps spread, a whisper of movement.

One eye squinted open, just a slit. Pete grabbed the knife next to the shower, a flash of the silver and white blade, and stepped outside onto the south deck.
