SITTING SIDE BY side on the ship, Pete shifted closer to Nigel until his shoulder touched Nigel’s shoulder.

“I assumed, as a royal of the Dagerstanteen court, that you would judge me for what I am.”

“I am, you know. I’m judging you,” Pete agreed. “I judge you as one of the most inspiring warriors I’ve ever seen. I think your human side gives you a special edge. I swear I can’t figure out what it is about you. I haven’t solved how you can have no sense tentacle and no third eye, yet you know what I will do before I do it.” Pete paused. “It’s like you can see behind you and pick up on what will happen before it does.”

Nigel turned his head, his gaze locking with Pete’s. A palpable warmth radiated from the royal, a subtle, humming energy that Nigel recognized, a familiar siren’s song that drew him in every night.
