“CAN YOU SEE anything?” Pete’s voice, warm and close, reached Nigel as his bare feet trod on a soft, yielding fabric. Moments ago, he’d been certain he stood on cold stone. Now, he considered they might have been tiles.
“It’s all white,” Nigel groaned, the sound thick with frustration. “Are we alone? Oi, that was a right crock of shite. I embarrassed myself.”
“We are alone in the hallway outside JP’s lab.” Pete’s tentacles, still firmly reassuring, remained wrapped around Nigel’s waist. “And it’s okay. Don’t be embarrassed. That was my fault, not yours. I shouldn’t have stepped out. I knew you would do something like that, and I should’ve been there. I’ve been sitting with you every second since we got here, but of course, the moment I got up, you awakened. Why not, right?”
