Chapter 4

As I stood lost in thought by the hospital room door, her head hanging low, Luna appeared.

Someone must have i nformed her of our location in this hospital. She glanced dispassionately at the mother and daughter lying in the room. "These two, grandmother and granddaughter, sure have luck on their side. But Donavan... he's never coming back."

At Luna's mention of Donavan again, a sudden surge of inexplicable anger welled up inside me. I stared at Luna intently, my voice terribly hoarse: "Donavan, Donavan, always Donavan. For the sake of one Donavan, are you willing to let my daughter die? Luna, in your heart, is our daughter worth less than a dead Donavan?"

No sooner had I finished speaking than Luna's hand struck my face with a resounding slap.

"How dare you speak of Donavan? If you hadn't insisted he see that therapist, how could this have happened? Your mom and daughter aren't even dead yet, and you're already in such agony. Do you have any idea how much pain I felt when my childhood best guy friend passed away?"

A burning sensation spread across my face, but no physical pain could compare to the anguish in my heart at that moment.I raise my head to look at Luna, gazing at this woman I've loved for seven years. I begin to doubt myself, wondering if my decision to pursue her seven years ago was a mistake from the very start.

How could there ever be pure friendship between a man and a woman? The person she truly loves is clearly Donavan. For Donavan's sake, she could even treat our own daughter's life as worthless...

After seven years, I finally understand this truth, but it seems it's already too late.

However, thankfully, not everything is beyond saving. I look at Luna with reddened eyes.

I used to think I'd never say those words to her in this lifetime. I thought she was the only one for me forever. But now, without hesitation, I say those words to her: "Luna, let's get a divorce."

At that moment, another voice rings out simultaneously with mine:

"Luna, I'm back."

Hearing this voice, I freeze. Luna whips her head around, seeing her male best friend who had been dead for three years.

"Donavan?"

Luna's face is filled with disbelief. After all, Donavan had been dead for three years, so how could he possibly be here now?"Yeah, I'm not dead. I just wanted to play a joke on you guys. Did you really believe it?"

He looked at Luna, opening his arms wide. "Aren't you going to come and give me a hug? Haven't you missed me after all this time?"

Luna instinctively glanced back at me, then shook her head vigorously. "You... how can you not be dead? I saw your body back then, and I even saw our friendship bracelet. If you weren't dead, why didn't you show up? Where have you been all these years?"

"Oh, come on. I was just really angry at the time, so I stormed off. When I got to the suburbs, I was still fuming, so I threw our friendship bracelet away. Who knew someone would pick it up, and that person ended up getting struck by lightning and dying? Remember I had signed up to study abroad? So I just left the country!"

As he spoke, he walked towards Luna, trying to hug her.
