Scene 1: The Next Day at School
The sun was barely up when Yusuke stepped out of his house, his school bag feeling heavier than usual. He wasn't sure if it was the weight of his books or the embarrassment from yesterday still pressing down on him.
"They must all think I'm weird now…" he thought, sighing.
As he entered the classroom, the usual chatter filled the air. Some students turned to look at him, whispering among themselves. He quickly lowered his head and hurried to his seat.
His new seatmate—Daichi—was already there, resting his chin on his hand, staring blankly at the board. The other two—Kenta and Satoshi—had already taken different seats, as per the teacher's instructions yesterday.
"Oi, nerd," Daichi said, his tone casual but teasing. "You sure made a scene yesterday."
Yusuke stiffened. He wanted to disappear.
"But," Daichi continued, leaning back on his chair, "at least now the teacher knows you exist."
Yusuke blinked. He wasn't sure if that was meant to be an insult or… encouragement? Daichi didn't laugh like the others had yesterday.
"…I wasn't trying to make a scene," Yusuke mumbled.
Daichi smirked but didn't push the topic. Instead, he yawned and stretched his arms. "Yeah, whatever. Anyway, since we're stuck sitting together, don't be annoying, alright?"
Yusuke simply nodded.
Scene 2: A Classroom Without Mercy
Throughout the morning, whispers and occasional chuckles from his classmates reminded Yusuke of his outburst. Someone even made a loud fake crying sound when he walked past, causing a few students to laugh.
"Hey, what's wrong? Gonna cry again?" one boy jeered.
Yusuke bit his lip and kept walking, ignoring them. But before he could take another step, Daichi suddenly stood up, shoving his chair back.
"Oi." His voice was sharp, cutting through the chatter like a knife. "If you've got time to act like idiots, go do something useful."
The boy flinched. "W-We're just joking—"
"Yeah?" Daichi narrowed his eyes. "Then I'll 'joke' back next time."
A tense silence filled the room. No one dared to say another word, and soon, the teasing died down. Yusuke sat at his desk, surprised.
"Why did you do that…?" he asked quietly.
Daichi scoffed. "Don't get the wrong idea, nerd. I just hate noisy people."
But Yusuke could tell—this was Daichi's way of helping him.
Scene 3: A Small Step Forward
The rest of the day passed uneventfully, but something felt different. No one bothered Yusuke much anymore, and when the final bell rang, he felt… lighter.
As he packed his bag, Daichi glanced at him.
"You're bad at talking, huh?"
Yusuke blinked. "I… guess?"
"Then don't talk. Just listen," Daichi said, slinging his bag over his shoulder. "I'll do the talking."
And with that, he walked out.
Yusuke stared after him, a small smile forming on his lips.
Maybe… just maybe… school wouldn't be so bad after all.
