Chapter 45: The Power of the Poison Spike

Seeing how easily Yue Zhong and the others had killed three S1 zombies, the remaining seven S1 zombies still charged toward them without fear. Although the S1s had evolved with agility far beyond that of ordinary humans, they had not developed a sense of fear.

Two of the S1s fell behind, but the remaining five formed a small group and rushed toward Yue Zhong and his team.

The threat posed by these five S1s was far greater than a group of a hundred ordinary zombies.

"Retreat!" Yue Zhong gave the command in a low voice and immediately began to fall back.

Chi Yang and Baigu quickly followed him, staying close by his side.

The three of them retreated at a speed slightly faster than that of ordinary humans, keeping their distance from the massive horde of regular zombies.

However, the seven S1s, being much faster than ordinary zombies, continued to close in on them.

Within a few seconds, the five S1s leading the group had closed the distance to just ten meters from Yue Zhong and his team.

Yue Zhong spoke in a deep voice, "Earth Spike!"

Chi Yang pointed toward the five S1s, and a gray light shot from the Earth Spike Ring in his hand, embedding itself into the ground in front of the five S1s.

As the five S1s passed over the spot, a sharp three-meter-high earth spike suddenly shot out of the ground, impaling one of the S1s and pinning it to the spike.

Baigu immediately rushed forward, swinging its axe with a whistling sound and cleaving one of the S1s in half.

Almost in the same instant, three of the remaining S1s lashed out at Baigu, their claws sinking into its body.

Thanks to the Bone Enhancement skill, Baigu's body was far stronger than before. The claws of the three S1s only left shallow scratches on it, and they didn't manage to tear apart its bones.

Taking advantage of the distraction caused by Baigu, Yue Zhong stepped forward and struck, decapitating one of the S1s. Chi Yang also moved forward and cut off another S1's head.

The remaining S1 didn't have time to react before Baigu swung its axe again, slicing the S1 in half, spilling its entrails and blood across the ground.

The remaining two S1s, undeterred, continued to charge toward the group.

With only two S1s remaining, Yue Zhong felt less pressure. Facing five S1s alone had been difficult, but with just two, even with his Level 2 protective suit and multiple enhancements, they were not too much of a challenge.

Baigu took a step forward and cleaved one of the remaining S1s in half with a single axe swing, causing blood to splatter everywhere.

Yue Zhong pulled out his Poison Spike Pistol, stepped forward, and aimed it at the head of the last S1. He squeezed the trigger.

With a loud bang, the head of the S1 exploded upon impact from the Poison Spike bullet, creating a massive hole. Black brain matter and blood sprayed out in all directions.

"What a powerful gun! This can almost be called a hand cannon." Yue Zhong couldn't help but smile. With this Poison Spike, even if a hunter were hit in the head, it would be obliterated. Even if the hunter wasn't hit in the head, any body part struck would result in severe damage.

Moreover, the recoil of the Poison Spike was far less than Yue Zhong had expected—it was only comparable to a regular 54 pistol, not as extreme as he had feared.

"Congratulations! You have reached Level 14 and earned two enhancement points. Please allocate your points."

After blowing off the S1's head, Yue Zhong heard a pleasant sound in his mind.

"Enhance two points in agility." Yue Zhong made his choice swiftly.

During his mutations, Yue Zhong had focused on strength and vitality because using a wooden stick as a weapon required tremendous strength to kill zombies. He needed to maintain enough strength and vitality to fight hordes. But now, especially when fighting evolved zombies like the Level 20 hunters, having firearms made agility his most needed attribute.

The seven S1s had dropped a skill book, six white treasure boxes, and 70 survival coins.

Yue Zhong quickly swept up the items on the ground and, together with Chi Yang, retreated swiftly.

After killing ten S1s, the remaining zombies no longer posed a threat to Yue Zhong, Chi Yang, or Baigu.

Ordinary zombies were slow-moving and couldn't catch up to the enhanced Yue Zhong and Chi Yang, even if they tried. After leveling up, their strength and speed were far beyond that of normal humans.

Yue Zhong, Chi Yang, and Baigu, with Baigu at the forefront, moved methodically as they cut through the L1 zombies in the horde, retreating while dispatching ordinary zombies along the way.

Baigu, having undergone bone enhancement, showed its ferocity in combat. It easily cleaved through ordinary zombies, unharmed and unstoppable by the weak attacks of the undead.

Without Baigu serving as a tank to absorb zombie attacks, Yue Zhong and Chi Yang would not have been able to fight for long. The kite tactics required immense stamina.

After slaying over 150 zombies, the group quickly retreated toward Ji Qingwu's location.

Fighting large zombie hordes was far more exhausting than dealing with isolated zombies. With his enhanced body, Yue Zhong could kill a hundred zombies with slight fatigue, but battling the 300 zombies left him drained after killing just sixty. He could no longer maintain the stamina needed to finish the fight.

After a quick dash, the three of them arrived back at Ji Qingwu's safe spot.

Once they reached safety, Yue Zhong and Chi Yang ate a vitality apple each to recover their stamina.

Ji Qingwu approached Yue Zhong and asked, "How did it go?"

Yue Zhong replied in a low voice, "The special evolved zombies have been cleared out. There are about 200 regular zombies remaining."

The residents on Xining Road weren't just the 300 zombies they had encountered. When the mutations began at around 2 p.m., most people had gathered in the commercial areas and pedestrian streets on the other side of Lei Jiang Bridge. Some of the fleeing survivors had led zombies to other areas. Meanwhile, a mysterious force had covered the Lei Jiang Bridge, preventing the zombies from crossing, which was why there were fewer zombies in the Xining Road area.

Ji Qingwu's eyes sparkled with excitement as she stared at Yue Zhong and asked, "Are we going to clean up the rest now?"

Ji Qingwu had been a swordsmanship expert in the previous world, and she longed to grow stronger. The days spent lying in bed had made her restless.

If she fought the 200 regular zombies alone, Ji Qingwu knew she wouldn't stand a chance, but with Yue Zhong, Chi Yang, and Baigu helping, she was confident they could take them all down in no time.

Yue Zhong nodded. "Let's go."
