The Cursed Hall – A Conundrum Unravelled

Eris couldn't stop grinning. It was after defeating the Ironclad Spider that she believed she could conquer anything the dungeon attempted to throw at her. She was still shaking a little from the excitement-it had begun at the touch-the adrenaline was beginning to wear off, to be replaced with a rising sense of achievement.

"Well, that was something, huh?" Eris laughed, raking her fingers through her tangled hair. "I can't believe I really did that."

A hunter whose heart was filled with pride. "Not bad, kid. For someone new to adventuring, you're sure starting to get the hang of this."

"Well, I'm not a complete disaster, am I?" Eris smiled, brushing some dirt off her armor. She stood still for a moment, letting the victory wash over her, but then a treasure chest she had noticed earlier drew her attention. She rushed to it in the hopes that it would have something useful or some upgrades.

"C'mon, big treasure," she muttered, kneeling to lift the lid of the chest.

[SYSTEM: Treasure Chest Detected – you have found a mystery item(s) inside.]

The chest creaked open and Eris's eyes widened at its contents. It wasn't gold or glittering jewels, but an aged sheet of parchment, a peculiar-looking crystal, and a comically shaped key.

"What's this stuff?" Eris said, taking up the parchment first. A map started to emerge as she uncoiled it, shining subtly within the poor lighting of the dungeon. But the map was nothing like a regular treasure map — it appeared to be in constant motion, with symbols that felt like they were constantly reshuffling.

"What the heck?" Eris squinted at the undulating map, and said aloud. "This does not make sense even! It's as if it's… alive or something."

"Yeah, this is definitely something new," Leon thought, an eerie discomfort in the air. "The system didn't get me a hint this time. It's starting to seem like we're being surveilled."

Eris looked around; the dungeon was cursedly silent. The sounds of living things moving in the shadows were distant now, and the dungeon felt almost too quiet, for a moment.

Disregarding her uneasiness, Eris shoved the map into her pack and grabbed the rest of the things. It was a weird crystal, small like a marble, glittering with strange energy. It wasn't treasure or gemstones like in the tales she'd read; this one seemed almost… alive.

"What's this supposed to do?" she asked, lifting the crystal to the light. It had a strange pulse, and her chest tingled.

"You feel that, right?" There was a note of concern in Leon's mind voice. "That's no ordinary crystal. This is dangerous, Eris. You should put it down."

But before Eris could even think of returning the crystal to the ground, a deep rumbling shook the entirety of the dungeon.

[SYSTEM WARNING: Unstable Magical Energies Detected.]

The crystal set in her palm hummed, its surface getting brighter and brighter. Then suddenly there was a blinding explosion of light from it which flooded the whole room with glaring illumination.

"W-What the—?" Eris backed away, heart pounding in her chest. She could barely comprehend the magnitude of what this would mean for her before the walls around her started to move.

Imagined walls that had once been solid turned liquid, squirming and folding like a twisted puzzle. The ground dropped from under her, a maelstrom of colors and warped images.

"Not good, not good!" Eris gasped and pulled Leon's body close as she was sucked toward the eye of the vortex. She fought against it, but the weight of gravity was unrelenting. As the world around her faded to the background, all she could hear was the sounds of the dungeon, Starting to fade into the distance.

Then, all of a sudden, the world around Eris shattered.

The light disappeared, and Eris stood in what appeared to be an ancient hall. The architecture bore no resemblance to the dungeon she had just passed through; it was grander, with soaring columns and huge stone doors at the far end. The air was steeped in magic, and the floor was slippery and polished under her feet, reflecting light that originated from nowhere.

"Okay, this is… new," Eris said, with a glance around. "Did we teleport to some ancient temple or something?"

"Looks like it, but this ain't no temple I've heard about," Leon said. "We've got bigger problems. It's not the most welcoming place," the man decided.

Eris stepped closer, the sound of her boots echoing in the empty hallway. The walls were covered with runes and symbols Eris could not decipher. The further she ventured into the hall, the weirder it got—a tickle spreading up her spine—the feeling of being watched.

A voice suddenly booming from nowhere sent a chill down her spine.

"Who dares to disturb the sacred hall of the Elders?"

Eris stilled, holding Leon even more tightly as the voice reverberated around her. It was rich, primal and powerful. It was as if the hall itself were speaking to her.

"I… I don't know what's happening but I'm not here to cause trouble!" Further Reading Eri cried, her voice awash with emotion.

The voice didn't answer right away, but after a moment, the stone doors at the far end of the passageway began to creak open. Three figures emerged from the inside. They were shrouded in dark robes, and their faces were in shadow. They all radiated overwhelming authority, the pressure in the air was palpable.

Eris gulped. "This does not look good, Leon."

"I don't like this either. We're likely walking directly into a trap." Leon's voice was tense. "Just keep calm, and whatever happens, don't get overconfident."

The first figure approached, and Eris could sense the two-looking, though their face was hidden in the hood.

"You don't belong here, mortal."

Eris had no idea how to reply. She was now out of her depth, and the last thing she wanted to do was to antagonize these people.

"What do you mean? I was just—"

"Silence!" the figure ordered, holding up a hand. "You've come into contact with something you mustn't have. The Cursed Crystal. Do you realize what you've set loose on yourself?"

Eris' heart sank as she blinked. "Cursed Crystal? I — uh, I didn't realize it was cursed. I just found it in a treasure chest! I—"

The figure spoke, interrupting her and sounding sympathetic.

"You've released the power of the Elders, and there will be consequences for that."
