Chapter 8: The Imperial Surprise

The three imperial warships loomed ominously on the horizon, their sails black against the afternoon sun. The Black Fang, alone and outnumbered, sat like a small, vulnerable target caught in a trap of its own making.

Henry's mind raced. How did this happen?

Marrow was still gleefully tossing tiny explosives at the pirates she had already incapacitated, completely oblivious to the new threat. Scarlet was reloading her pistol, trying to maintain her usual calm demeanor. Grok was muttering something about "unnatural order," as he slammed a barrel of rum into the ground.

Boggart, who had been surprisingly quiet until now, finally spoke up. "Cap'n… you might wanna get us moving."

Henry turned sharply to face his crew. "Yes, yes! Good thinking, Boggart!"

The problem? Henry had zero idea how to maneuver the ship quickly enough to escape an entire imperial fleet. He had barely managed to sail in a straight line the other day.

"Alright," he said, pacing in circles, "let's think this through. We've got three imperial ships, they're closing in fast, and we… don't have much time to—"

Scarlet interrupted. "No offense, Captain, but we're the ones who are in trouble, not the imperials. We should run."

Henry took a deep breath. "You're right. Scarlet, take the wheel. Let's put all that 'speed' we've been lacking to use."

Scarlet raised an eyebrow. "You want me to—what? We're already trapped."

"You're a genius, Scarlet. Just do it!" Henry barked. "Everyone else—get ready to fight. I don't care what it is. Just be ready."

Shade, who had quietly appeared next to Henry without warning (again), said, "I already know what to do. You'll need me to create a distraction."

Henry blinked. "Uh, yes. Whatever that means, just do it."

And with that, the chaos began.

Scarlet took the wheel with practiced hands, spinning it sharply to the right. The Black Fang groaned and responded reluctantly, its battered sails flapping furiously as it veered off course.

"Hold on!" Henry shouted as he grabbed a nearby rope for support, trying to look cool while pretending like he was in control.

Meanwhile, Shade—true to his word—vanished into the shadows of the ship, leaving only a faint whisper of a cold breeze behind.

As the Black Fang rocketed forward, the imperial ships started to chase, their cannons roaring to life. The first round of cannonballs splashed into the water just shy of the ship, sending water spraying onto the deck.

Grok, who had been securing the cannons on the ship, immediately began firing back with way too much enthusiasm. "FIRE THE CANNONS, BOYS!" he bellowed, his booming voice echoing across the open sea.

BOOM!

The cannons on the Black Fang fired, sending one of the imperial ships reeling as the shot struck their side. For a split second, it seemed like they might actually stand a chance.

Then came the second round of cannonballs.

"CAPTAIN!" Scarlet shouted, swerving the wheel. "They're closing in on us!"

Henry's eyes darted to the other imperial ships. They were coming in fast, cutting off all possible escape routes. This was bad.

"Shade!" Henry yelled, his voice strained. "What the hell are you doing?!"

In that moment, Shade emerged from the shadows, eyes gleaming with barely-contained malice. "I've been doing exactly what you wanted, Captain." He raised his hand, and in a swift motion, the wind around them suddenly shifted.

A massive gust of wind blasted across the deck, pushing the Black Fang forward at an alarming speed. The imperial ships' sails flapped wildly, but the sudden change in direction threw their alignment off.

"NOW!" Henry shouted.

Marrow, who had apparently joined the fight against the imperial ships with two more bombs in hand, took her cue. She hurled one into the air, its fuse sizzling as it sailed toward the nearest enemy vessel.

The explosion shook the air. The pirate ship rocked violently as its main mast cracked in half, sending the crew into a panic.

"HA!" Marrow cackled. "Who's got the advantage now?"

But it wasn't enough. The imperial ships weren't backing off. If anything, they were getting closer.

Henry's heart raced. This was it. The ultimate moment.

He turned to his crew. "Everyone, gather around!"

"We can't outrun them!" Scarlet said, her tone fierce. "We'll be obliterated in a few minutes if we don't do something drastic!"

Boggart raised his hand. "Um… Cap'n… I got an idea, but it's a bit… risky."

Henry's eyes gleamed. "Risky is my middle name."

Grok grinned. "That's not true."

"Doesn't matter," Henry said, grinning. "What's the plan, Boggart?"

Boggart pointed at the barrels of rum on the deck. "We could turn the rum into a fire bomb. Set the barrels on fire, launch them at their ships—blow 'em sky high."

Henry paused for a second, then nodded. "Alright. Do it. We make our last stand, and we take down those ships!"

The crew immediately went to work. Scarlet and Boggart set the barrels alight, rolling them toward the side of the ship. Marrow and Grok started loading them into the cannons.

Henry grabbed his sword. "We're not dying today! We're going down fighting!"

As the barrels were loaded and the cannons aimed, Henry's heart raced with anticipation. The pirates had underestimated the Black Fang—and now, they would see just how wrong they were.

With a final roar, the Black Fang hurled the fiery rum-filled barrels straight toward the imperial ships. One by one, the barrels exploded in magnificent flames, sending plumes of fire and smoke into the sky.

The imperial ships began to panic as the flames spread, their crew scrambling to put out the fires. The Black Fang took advantage of the chaos, sailing into the smoke and out of the imperial's line of sight.

"We did it!" Scarlet shouted, laughing in relief.

Henry looked at his crew—his chaotic, unpredictable, and absolutely insane crew—and grinned.

"That was too close," he muttered. "But it worked."

Marrow slapped him on the back. "You really know how to make things explode, Cap'n."

Henry beamed. "It's my specialty."

Shade, standing in the shadows, whispered, "This battle was just the beginning. The seas will know your name now, Captain Henry Garagam."

To be continued…
