After a hasty meal, Mi Jing picked up the wine glass on the table, wanting to drink some alcohol to suppress the anger surging in her chest. But before the glass reached her lips, her hand was grabbed by a large hand, stopping her mid-motion.
What is he doing? Not allowing her to drink?
Mi Jing looked up at Shen Lingxing, her bright eyes filled with confusion.
"Chen drank from this glass."
Shen Lingxing's deep and captivating eyes met Mi Jing's puzzled gaze. As he spoke, he removed the glass from her hand and placed it back on the table, then picked up another unused glass and poured a small amount of wine.
"Drink this one." Shen Lingxing smiled faintly as he handed the glass to Mi Jing.
Without a second of hesitation, Mi Jing took the glass and downed the wine in one go.
"Cough, cough..."
She drank too fast, causing Mi Jing to choke. She put down the glass and covered her mouth, coughing.
"Drink slowly." Shen Lingxing gently patted Mi Jing's back, reminding her.
"Cough, cough..."
Mi Jing responded with a series of continuous coughs. After a while, she finally stopped coughing, her eyes red like a rabbit's, nearly tearing up.
"Can you pour me another one?"
Mi Jing held the glass out to Shen Lingxing, her pleading look combined with her red eyes made her seem pitiful, softening Shen Lingxing's heart.
He knew she was in a bad mood; he had seen the confrontation with that couple earlier. Although she didn't talk about it, he didn't want to ask more questions, pouring her another small half-glass of wine, indulging her need to drown her sorrows.
After several repetitions, most of the bottle of red wine ended up in Mi Jing's stomach. By then, her face was flushed, but her mind was still clear. "Waiter!"
"How can I help you?" The waiter walked over and politely asked.
"The bill!"
Mi Jing pulled out her bank card and slapped it on the table, arrogantly uttering two words.
"Miss, this gentleman has already paid the bill," the waiter explained, glancing at Shen Lingxing.
Wasn't she supposed to treat?
Mi Jing blinked, then stared at Shen Lingxing for a while. She was about to say something but quickly realized that Shen Lingxing didn't like her being polite with him. Keeping this in mind, she said nothing more, grabbed her bag, and supported herself on the table to stand up. "Let's go."
Having said that, Mi Jing took the lead and walked out. Because she was slightly intoxicated, she felt a bit light-headed and unsteady, wobbling as if she might fall.
Seeing this, Shen Lingxing took a few large strides to catch up, extended his arm, and held her as they walked out of the restaurant.
The night scene was as dazzling as ever, the cold wind blowing against their faces quickly dropped the temperature of Mi Jing's burning cheeks. The chill made her instinctively shrink her neck.
"I need to get back to the shop, you go home first!"
Mi Jing hadn't driven; Shen Lingxing had picked her up. Now she wanted to meet Mi Wan, so she planned to take a taxi back to the coffee shop.
"I'll take you."
Shen Lingxing didn't let go of her arm, waiting with her for the valet to bring the car around.
Soon, the car arrived. Shen Lingxing took the keys from the valet and opened the door for Mi Jing to get in.
In the car, Mi Jing didn't hold back just because Shen Lingxing was beside her. She quickly pulled out her phone and called Mi Wan.
Beep, beep...
After several rings, a mechanical female voice announced that no one was answering.
But Mi Jing didn't give up and dialed Mi Wan's number again.
She called several times until finally, on the fourth attempt, someone answered.
"Sis, come to the shop, I have something to tell you!" Mi Jing said sternly while looking at the traffic.
"Now? What's wrong? Are you in trouble?" Mi Wan's first reaction was that Mi Jing was in some kind of trouble.
"I'm fine. It's about you, something very important. Urgent. Come immediately." Mi Jing yelled into the phone, leaving Mi Wan speechless for a long while until Mi Jing hung up.
Mi Jing was in turmoil. She was angry, resentful, upset. Why did Mi Wan, such a good person, encounter such tragic events? Mi Wan had given so much and sacrificed so much for this marriage, what right did Song Guotao have to hurt her?
Mi Jing's hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into her palms, but the pain did nothing to lessen her grip. She only held tighter, hoping the pain could numb her anger and sorrow temporarily.
After Shen Lingxing dropped Mi Jing off at the coffee shop, Mi Wan arrived a few minutes later. Mi Jing said nothing, only pulling her to the rear balcony.
"Sis, are you hiding something from me?" Mi Jing glared at Mi Wan, demanding.
"You know?" Mi Wan remained calm, not showing the slightest surprise. On the way over, she had guessed that Mi Jing might know about Song Guotao and that woman.
Indeed, Mi Wan hadn't been honest with her.
She should have sensed something earlier. Why else would Mi Wan argue with Song Guotao out of nowhere and even want to divorce him? She had been suspicious but trusted Mi Wan too much to think she would lie.
"Why did you lie to me?" Mi Jing's eyes filled with a mist, and her throat tightened, her voice choked with sobs.
"I..." Mi Wan looked down, guilt-ridden, avoiding Mi Jing's sorrowful gaze.
"Look at me!" Mi Jing shouted, startling Mi Wan, who quickly lifted her head, somewhat lost and confused.
"Jingjing, don't be like this..." Mi Wan reached out to hold Mi Jing's shoulders, trying to calm her down.
"Then what should I do? Should I comfort you with a smile? Pretend I still know nothing?" Mi Jing asked tearfully, her eyes hot, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"Don't cry, I... I didn't mean to lie to you."
Mi Wan hurriedly explained, raising her hand to wipe Mi Jing's tears, but Mi Jing turned away, avoiding her. Seeing this, Mi Wan retracted her hand dejectedly, looking anxiously at Mi Jing.
"Sniff, sniff..."
Mi Jing wiped her tears carelessly, trying to control her emotions. "If I hadn't seen Song Guotao asking that woman to marry him today and called you out, were you planning to keep this from me forever?"
