Chapter 25: Echoes of the Past
The night was heavy with silence, the kind that felt unnatural, as if the world itself was holding its breath. Joon sat by the dim glow of a malfunctioning neon sign, his fingers tracing invisible patterns on the cold pavement. His mind was clouded, weighed down by an unshakable feeling of déjà vu. Pieces of a puzzle he had long ignored were beginning to realign, and it terrified him.
His abilities had granted him access to the minds of many, but what if they had also stolen something from him in return? Memories flickered in his head, disjointed fragments of a girl—her voice, a whisper lost in the wind, a smile that felt painfully familiar. But no matter how hard he tried to grasp onto the details, they slipped through his fingers like sand.
Sohyun leaned against the wall beside him, her gaze locked onto the darkened streets ahead. "You're thinking about something," she said, not as a question, but a fact.
Joon hesitated before nodding. "It's like... I should remember something, but I don't. It's as if my mind refuses to hold onto it."
She crossed her arms, considering his words. "That's not normal. Not for you. Do you think it has something to do with the Architects?"
Joon exhaled sharply, rubbing his temples. "Probably. It wouldn't be the first time they messed with my head. But it's not just them. There's something more. Someone more."
His fingers twitched as a surge of something—regret? Fear?—coursed through him. He could feel the weight of an unspoken truth pressing against his ribs, suffocating. If only he could break through the fog clouding his past.
Suddenly, a sharp noise cut through the silence. Footsteps—quick, hurried, and desperate. Joon was on his feet in an instant, eyes narrowing as a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a boy, no older than fifteen, breathing heavily as if he had been running for his life.
"Help me!" the boy gasped, staggering toward them. His clothes were torn, his face streaked with dirt.
Sohyun stepped forward, her instincts kicking in. "Who are you? What's wrong?"
The boy's eyes darted behind him, terror etched into every movement. "They're coming. They found out."
Joon stepped closer. "Who? Who found out?"
The boy barely had a chance to answer before the air grew thick with tension. The distant hum of approaching drones filled the space between them. The Architects.
Joon clenched his fists. "Damn it. We have to move."
Sohyun grabbed the boy's arm, already leading him away. "Where can we hide?"
Joon's mind raced. "The underground passages. If we're fast enough, we can lose them before they scan the area."
With the boy in tow, they took off into the night, weaving through the maze of abandoned buildings and crumbling streets. Every second counted, every step bringing them closer to either safety or capture.
But as Joon ran, that gnawing feeling in his chest only grew stronger. There was more to this than just another chase. Something was unraveling. Something he had long forgotten—or had been forced to forget.
And as the shadows of the past loomed over him, Joon realized that this was only the beginning.
