Awakening the Past

Chapter 42: Awakening the Past

Kael-X stood on the rooftop, his mind a battlefield of fragmented memories and unwanted commands. Zypheron-5 was reaching out to him, trying to pull him back into their grasp—not physically, but mentally.

They think I'm still theirs.

Maya stood beside him, concern in her eyes. Elijah leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "So, let me get this straight," Elijah said. "You're some kind of super soldier from a secret organization, and now they want you back?"

Kael-X didn't respond immediately. His gaze was fixed on the skyline, scanning for threats. He had always known Zypheron-5 wouldn't let him go so easily. But this… this was different.

They're not coming for me with weapons. They're coming for my mind.

Maya touched his arm gently. "Kael, we need to do something. If they can still mess with your head—"

Kael-X closed his eyes briefly, pushing out the phantom voices whispering in his skull. When he opened them again, his resolve was unshaken. "I won't let them control me."

Elijah scoffed. "Yeah? And how do you stop a bunch of mad scientists with access to who-knows-what kind of tech?"

Kael-X turned to face him. "By finding out what they did to me… and breaking it."

Meanwhile, in Zypheron-5 Headquarters

Dr. Helena watched the monitor, analyzing Kael-X's reaction to the implanted trigger command.

He resisted it.

That was not supposed to be possible. The neural conditioning was designed to override independent thought. Even if he had escaped, his core programming should have remained intact.

Yet Kael-X had fought it off.

Director Sloan stood behind her, arms folded. "So? Did it work?"

Helena hesitated. "Not as expected."

Sloan exhaled through his nose. "Then we move to Phase Two."

Helena turned to him, uneasy. "You really want to use that?"

Sloan's expression darkened. "We have no choice. He's proving to be more resistant than projected. If we can't control him remotely…"

He leaned forward, tapping on the console. "We send someone who can."

Helena's blood ran cold as the screen flickered, revealing a containment chamber deep within the facility. Inside, something—or someone—began to stir.

Kael-X wasn't the only weapon Zypheron-5 had created.

And now, his past was coming for him.

---

Back in the City

Kael-X and Maya sat on the balcony, the city lights stretching below them. He had been quiet for a long time.

Finally, Maya spoke. "You've never told me… why did you escape?"

Kael-X's fingers tapped against his knee. He had tried not to think about it, but the memories were always there, waiting.

The pain. The tests. The endless training.

The realization that he was never meant to be free.

He looked at Maya, his voice lower than usual. "Because I didn't want to be a weapon."

Maya nodded, understanding more than she let on. "Then we make sure they never take you back."

Kael-X glanced at her. For the first time in a long while, he felt something unfamiliar. A reason to fight for more than just survival.

But deep inside, he knew this was only the beginning.

Zypheron-5 was coming.

And this time, they weren't coming alone.

Chapter 42: Awakening the Past (Continuation)

The air on the balcony felt heavier now, charged with an unspoken tension. Kael-X had always known he wasn't the only experiment Zypheron-5 had created. But the thought of them sending someone—or something—after him made his muscles tighten instinctively.

They wouldn't stop until I was back under their control. Or dead.

Maya watched him carefully. "You're thinking too much again."

Kael-X exhaled sharply through his nose. "I have to."

Elijah stepped out onto the balcony, holding a phone in his hand. "We might have a bigger problem."

He tossed the phone onto the table. The screen displayed a news report. The headline made Kael-X's stomach tighten.

"Unidentified Object Spotted Over City—Military on High Alert."

Maya picked up the phone and read out loud. "Eyewitnesses describe a dark figure moving at incredible speeds through the sky. Authorities have yet to confirm its origin."

She turned to Kael-X. "Is this them?"

Kael-X clenched his fists. "It's not just them. It's one of us."

Meanwhile, at Zypheron-5 Headquarters

Dr. Helena stood in front of the containment chamber, heart pounding. The reinforced glass was fogged, but she could see movement inside. It was awake.

A deep, mechanical breath vibrated through the room. The silhouette behind the glass shifted, and glowing red eyes flickered open.

Sloan's voice cut through the tension. "Welcome back, Subject V-02."

The chamber hissed as the seals released. The figure inside stepped forward, shadows clinging to its frame. Its face was obscured by a sleek mask, its body wrapped in reinforced exo-armor. Unlike Kael-X, this one had never escaped. It had never been given the chance.

And now, it had only one mission.

Retrieve or eliminate Subject V-01.

Back in the City

Kael-X stood abruptly. "I have to go."

Maya grabbed his wrist. "Go where? You don't even know what this thing is!"

He looked at her, his expression unreadable. "I don't need to. I already know how this ends."

Elijah scowled. "Damn it, Kael. You don't have to keep running into fights alone."

Kael-X shook his head. "This isn't just a fight. This is my past coming to collect its debt."

A sudden BOOM shook the city, sending distant car alarms blaring. The sky rippled as something dark cut through the clouds at terrifying speed. The streetlights flickered. A shadow passed overhead.

And then, Kael-X heard it.

A distorted voice, buzzing through his earpiece.

"V-01… Found you."

Kael-X's blood went cold.

The hunt had begun.

Chapter 42: Awakening the Past (Continuation)

The sky rippled again. This time, Kael-X wasn't the only one who noticed. Sirens blared in the distance, and civilians on the streets pointed upward in fear. The news helicopters that had been covering his earlier battles now turned their cameras to the sky.

A tear in the atmosphere—almost like a black hole—briefly shimmered before stabilizing.

Maya's grip on his wrist tightened. "Kael-X… what is that?"

He didn't answer immediately. His eyes were locked on the disturbance above. They're not sending something from Zypheron-5's labs… they're sending it directly from space.

Elijah cursed under his breath. "I don't like this."

A deep, mechanical hum reverberated through the air. Then, with a sudden burst of energy, a dark metallic object shot through the sky, moving at speeds that even the human eye could barely track. It wasn't a meteor. It wasn't a drone.

It was a drop-pod.

Kael-X's jaw clenched. "They're getting serious."

Above Earth – Zypheron-5 Warship: "Orion-12"

Commander Sloan stood on the observation deck, watching the live feed of Earth. Around him, his officers monitored the ship's systems, tracking every movement in the city below.

Dr. Helena stood beside him, arms crossed. "Subject V-02 has landed successfully. We'll have eyes on the target within minutes."

Sloan smirked. "Kael-X won't run forever. And when he finally stops, we'll be waiting."

Another officer turned. "Sir, should we prepare the secondary unit?"

Sloan's eyes narrowed. "Not yet. Let's see how well V-02 handles its little brother first."

---

Back on Earth

The drop-pod crashed into an abandoned district, sending shockwaves through the ground. Dust and debris erupted into the air, momentarily blocking visibility. The sound of metal scraping echoed as the pod's doors hissed open.

Kael-X exhaled slowly. "It's him."

A figure stepped out of the smoking wreckage.

V-02.

It was Kael-X's height, but bulkier, reinforced with an exo-suit designed for pure combat. Its face was hidden beneath a helmet with glowing red slits where eyes should be. It moved with purpose, its joints whirring with mechanical precision.

And then, it spoke.

"V-01… your trial period is over. Return to Zypheron-5."

Kael-X's response was immediate. "Not happening."

V-02 tilted its head slightly, as if analyzing him. Then, without another word, it vanished—moving so fast that even Kael-X barely reacted in time.

A shockwave exploded outward as Kael-X dodged at the last second, just barely avoiding a devastating strike. The sheer force of the attack shattered the building behind him.

Kael-X landed on his feet, fists clenched. His heartbeat was steady. This wasn't like the fights he had before.

This was a test. Zypheron-5 wanted to see how much he had grown.

And they sent his replacement to find out.
