The soft hum of the forest around Daisuke was interrupted by the sudden realization that he wasn't alone. He had been sitting on the ground, still trying to wrap his mind around the concept of being reincarnated, when a rustling sound broke through his reverie. His senses, heightened by the strange energy surging through his body, immediately picked up the sound of footsteps approaching.
Before he could react, a figure emerged from the dense foliage—a tall, lithe man dressed in a hooded cloak, his face partially obscured by a band of cloth. The man's movements were fluid, as if he were part of the forest itself, and his gaze was sharp and calculating, fixed on Daisuke.
The moment their eyes met, the man froze, his expression unreadable. For a tense moment, they simply stared at each other.
"Who are you?" the man asked, his voice low and wary, tinged with suspicion. "You're not from around here."
Daisuke's mind raced. What was this? Some sort of forest guardian? A bandit? Or perhaps someone else from this strange world? His first instinct was to say something—anything—to explain his situation, but words failed him. He had no idea how to start. How could he explain being reincarnated into a new life, granted some kind of "overpowered" system, and not look insane?
"Uh…" Daisuke stumbled, trying to form a coherent sentence. "I—I'm not sure how I got here. I'm new to this world."
The man's eyes narrowed, clearly not buying the vague response. He took a cautious step forward, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of a dagger strapped to his belt. "You're a stranger, then," he mused. "But you don't seem entirely lost. You look… well, strange, but not helpless. Something about you feels… different."
Daisuke tried to stand, still not fully understanding his new body's capabilities. To his surprise, he felt stronger than he had ever been. As he rose to his feet, the world around him seemed to stand still for a moment. His senses were sharper, his muscles more responsive, and his posture more confident. It felt as if the world itself was bending to accommodate his movements.
The man observed him closely, his suspicion slowly shifting into something else—curiosity, perhaps.
"Well, it seems like you're not just some helpless fool after all." The man lowered his guard slightly, but his eyes remained cautious. "Where are you from?"
Daisuke hesitated, unsure of what to say. How could he explain that he wasn't from this world? He couldn't. Not yet.
"I… I'm from a faraway place," Daisuke muttered, his words coming out slowly as he tried to make sense of everything. "I—I don't really know how to explain it. But I'm trying to figure things out."
The man's gaze softened slightly, though he remained wary. "I see. It's not safe to wander these woods without knowing what you're up against." He glanced around the forest, as though sensing something lurking in the shadows. "I'm Eren, a traveler and—at the moment—someone who's more familiar with the dangers of this world. You look like you could use some guidance."
Daisuke felt a mixture of relief and unease. On one hand, this man seemed like he could help him navigate the new world he had found himself in. On the other, he didn't know who to trust. This world was unfamiliar and dangerous, and it was unclear whether Eren had any hidden motives.
"Thank you," Daisuke said, trying to keep his tone neutral. "I could use some help. I've… just been given this strange system, and I'm not really sure how to use it."
Eren raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A system, you say? You must be one of the lucky ones, then. Not everyone gets a system when they enter this world." He stepped closer, his eyes glinting with interest. "What kind of system are we talking about?"
Before Daisuke could respond, another glowing screen appeared before his eyes, much like the one he'd seen earlier. The system's voice spoke again in his mind, as if it were responding to the situation.
"New Quest: Interaction with a Stranger
Objective: Understand the stranger's purpose and learn about the world. Completion rewards: Information, experience, and additional system upgrades."
The quest notification vanished, leaving Daisuke to process it. It seemed like his system was pushing him into action, urging him to interact with Eren in order to gain more knowledge and, perhaps, a deeper understanding of the world he now found himself in.
"Well, I guess that answers your question," Daisuke said with a nervous chuckle, trying to appear more confident than he felt. "My system says I need to talk to you."
Eren studied him for a moment, then seemed to come to a decision. "Alright then," he said with a half-smile. "Let's get you somewhere safer first. We can talk more on the way."
The walk through the forest was quiet, with Eren taking the lead. As they walked, Daisuke couldn't help but notice the details around him. The trees were tall and ancient, their trunks twisted with age, and the forest floor was carpeted with thick layers of moss. It felt alive—like the entire forest was breathing in time with his steps. He marveled at how clear everything seemed, how vibrant the colors were. In his old life, he had barely noticed the beauty of nature. Now, it was as if he could see the world with fresh eyes.
As they walked, Daisuke's system continued to hum softly in his mind, constantly feeding him small notifications. He checked them from time to time, watching his progress:
[System Update]
New Skill Unlocked: Observation
You gain the ability to observe the details of people and surroundings with greater clarity. This skill will improve your perception and understanding of the world.
His system seemed to be unlocking new skills and abilities with each passing moment, adapting to the challenges he encountered. It was overwhelming, but at the same time, Daisuke couldn't help but feel a strange excitement growing within him. This world had potential—his potential.
After what felt like an hour of walking, they arrived at a small clearing, where a simple campfire crackled. Several small tents were set up around the fire, and a few people sat near it, talking and laughing softly. They looked up as Eren approached, and their eyes flickered curiously to Daisuke.
"This is where I've been staying for the time being," Eren explained. "We're a small group of travelers, mostly people trying to survive in this world." He turned to the others and called out, "Hey, everyone! We have a new guest."
The others greeted Daisuke warmly but with the same guarded expressions they had seen from Eren. It was clear that trust wasn't given lightly in this world. Daisuke understood. He was an outsider, and his strange appearance and unfamiliarity with the world only added to the mystery.
As they sat around the fire, Daisuke began to feel the weight of his situation. He was no longer an office worker lost in his mundane life. He was in a new world with untold possibilities, but also immense dangers. And the system in his mind wasn't just a tool for power—it was a guide, pushing him toward something. But what?
The fire crackled as Eren spoke, breaking Daisuke's thoughts. "So, tell me more about this system of yours. I've heard of it, but it's not something most people get. You seem like you've got more than a simple status screen."
Daisuke nodded, trying to organize his thoughts. "I think you're right. It's not just a tool for leveling up. There's a lot more to it, and I don't fully understand it yet."
