Chapter 17 - A Normal Day, Almost

The office felt oddly familiar as Callie settled into her desk the morning after the welcome dinner. The usual sounds of typing, ringing phones, and hushed conversations filled the space, grounding her back into routine. She was grateful for it—anything to keep her mind off the events of last night.

Ava leaned over her cubicle, eyes twinkling with curiosity. "So, how'd you get home? You left early."

Callie hesitated for a moment before shrugging. "Just took a cab."

Ava pouted. "Boring. I was hoping for a scandalous story."

Callie laughed lightly, shaking her head. If only she knew.

The office door opened, and a wave of murmurs followed as their new boss, Dave Howard, stepped inside. Callie kept her gaze firmly on her monitor, pretending to be engrossed in work.

A few minutes later, a client walked in, requesting a consultation. The day passed in a blur of paperwork and meetings—just another ordinary day. Or at least, that's what she kept telling herself.

Even as she worked, she couldn't shake the awareness of the man sitting in the office just a few doors away.

At one point, Dave walked past her desk, pausing briefly. Callie glanced up just in time to catch him stealing a glance at her. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second before he looked away, continuing toward his office as if nothing had happened. Her heart skipped unreasonably, and she scolded herself for even noticing.

It was just another day. Almost.
