As Sean entered the Holy Light Church, Windsor arrived at the Mercenary Guild. Clad in plain leather armor—his sword and shield stowed in a backpack—he surveyed the bustling guild. It was 9 a.m., prime time for mercenaries to claim jobs. Instead of entering, he ducked into the tavern across the street. Bartenders know everything.
…
Inside, the air reeked of stale ale and sweat. Servants swept floors while hungover mercenaries dozed in corners. A young bartender approached.
"Two tankards of your mid-grade ale." Windsor tossed a silver coin.
The bartender's eyes lit—equivalent to a day's wages. "Thank you, sir! What news do you seek?"
"Sit." Windsor gestured. The bartender declined, citing rules.
"I'm new to Yorn. Looking to join a reputable company. Recommendations?"
"Ah, you've come to the right man! Yorn's Four Great Mercenary Companies are, in order: Wolf Den, Silver Hourglass, Dark Gold Rose, and Flame Cross." He lowered his voice: "Wolf Den answers to Count Rivers. Silver Hourglass serves the Holy Light Church. Dark Gold Rose and Flame Cross are independent."
"Which should I choose?"
"Do you possess douqi(EXL:A kind of knight energy)?"
Windsor conjured a gray-black aura. The bartender nodded: "Minimum requirement is Lower Black Iron rank. For safety, join Flame Cross. Silver Hourglass demands three years of church service. Dark Gold Rose recruits only women. Wolf Den is… rough. Members vanish regularly."
Another silver coin silenced his hesitation. "A distinguished guest has arrived at our tavern. It is Lord Henry, the former steward of the Viscount of the Lake. He is currently in a private room upstairs. It is he who has summoned the leaders of the four major mercenary groups. It seems that they are going to deal with the jackals in the riverside town"
"Fascinating." Windsor sipped the bitter ale, grimacing. Worse than dwarven swill.
…
The tavern filled as word spread of the meeting. Thirty minutes later, a stunning woman in scarlet leather armor entered—Scarlet Queen Lilith of Dark Gold Rose. Mercenaries gasped: "Is that the Lilith?!"
Ignoring the crowd, she turned to a Holy Light paladin trailing her. "Cain, you came. Did last night's words mean nothing?" Her voice trembled with hurt.
