The castle hall erupted into festivities as the banquet began. Dancers twirled on the floor, nobles belted songs with the band, but most clustered in groups, wineglasses in hand, networking. Sean, ignored by all except Count Rivers (now surrounded by sycophants), led Windsor to the buffet.
The tables overflowed with sumptuous dishes—though some looked… questionable. Sean bypassed the "bizarre vegetable platters," "dark green bubbling porridge," and "flatbread with four fish heads" in favor of roasted meats, cheeses, and bread. Loading his plate, he joined Windsor in a quiet corner.
…
The roasted meats impressed Sean—tender, possibly monster meat—while the breads and hams disappointed with poor seasoning. Between mouthfuls, he grilled Windsor:
"Did you investigate the mercenary companies?"
Windsor recounted his visit to the guild: "The bartender recommended Flame Cross. Their captain, Olga, is honorable. The others have… complications."
Sean frowned. "Silver Hourglass declined us. The Church has abandoned me as their 'Divine Son.'"
Windsor nodded. "Better free of their schemes. Focus on Flame Cross."
…
Spotting Jessica across the hall, Sean lingered. She stood surrounded by admirers, laughing politely as a boy performed a magic trick. Noticing his gaze, she smiled enigmatically. Her suitors, seeing her attention elsewhere, quickly looked away.
Windsor teased: "Staring at Jessica? Already smitten?"
Sean choked on his blueberry juice. "Nonsense! I … think her like the Magic Guild librarian."
Changing the subject, Sean asked: "Should we hire Flame Cross?"
"Your decision," Windsor replied. "But Olga's integrity aligns with your goals."
Sean grinned. "What if I choose Dark Gold Rose instead?"
Windsor groaned. "Don't let Lilith's charms cloud your judgment."

As the night wore on, Lucas danced with a flushed noblewoman, while Count Rivers played a lute-like instrument, serenading the crowd. Jessica, the daughter of the Earl of the River, was also surrounded by many people. Two female companions stood on either side of Jessica, who should be her best friends, while three or four young men of her age stood opposite her, constantly using language to please her, and even using magic tricks to please her.
