Chapter 23: Performing CPR on a Water Ghost!

"..."

Ma Long stared dumbfounded: "Old Xu, Brother Xu, Grandpa Xu! We just fished out a corpse here, and you're back fishing again?"

Not just him.

The surrounding rubberneckers were equally stunned. They'd seen brave souls before, but never anyone this audacious!

Someone raised their phone to film, uploading the video online. Within hours, the clip of this "daring angler" Xu Yang started trending nationwide. Riding the wave of the earlier "corpse fishing" scandal, the video exploded across social media. Though filmed at night without clear facial features, Xu Yang briefly became an internet sensation.

Unaware of his newfound fame, Xu Yang sat calmly by the riverbank holding his fishing rod, exuding the poise of "Jiang Taigong fishing". Midnight approached, the crowd had dispersed, and traffic dwindled to occasional passing cars.

Ma Long hovered nearby, urging for the umpteenth time: "Old Xu! It's midnight... Let's go home! This place gives me the creeps... So what if we don't catch anything? Going home empty-handed isn't shameful."

As he spoke, Xu Yang suddenly jerked his rod - a fat carp at least three catties* heavy broke the surface, its golden scales glinting under moonlight. A genuine Yellow River carp!

"Such a big fish?" Ma Long rushed over with a bucket. "Alright, you've caught something. Now can we... Huh? What's that sound?"

As Ma Long secured the catch, ghostly shadows rippled across the water surface. A distress call echoed from the river - there emerged a figure draped in aquatic weeds, hair matted with rancid flesh oozing pus. Yet through Ma Long's enchanted eyes, this rotting specter appeared as a drowning beauty.

"Help! Someone save me!" The illusory plea enchanted Ma Long. His eyes glazed over as he began stripping: "Old Xu! Someone's drowning! Gotta save her!"

Xu Yang realized too late - "Ma Long, don't--!"

With a splash, the self-proclaimed "White Dragon of the Waves" dove in, dog-paddling toward the water ghost. "Hold on miss! I'm coming!"

The ghost gaped in disbelief. As her decaying fingers reached to drag him under, Ma Long's arm locked around her neck in a rescue hold. "Don't struggle! We'll both drown!"

The water ghost panicked. Her yin energy surged to entangle him, yet dissolved upon contact like snow in fire. Before she could dematerialize, Ma Long hauled his "damsel" ashore.

Xu Yang, now scrambling onto the bank, witnessed the surreal scene: Ma Long pinning the thrashing ghost while lecturing, "Relax! I know CPR! Let me give you mouth-to-mouth... Wait, why are you flat-chested?!"

"Bastard! Release me-- Mmph!" The ghost's protest was smothered as Ma Long clamped his lips over hers.

Instantly recoiling, Ma Long wiped pus from his mouth: "Fuck! Your breath reeks of decay!" The broken enchantment revealed the ghastly truth. "GHOST!!" He fled screaming.

The freed ghost attempted to dissolve into mist, but Xu Yang's peachwood sword flashed. "Evil spirit, you're going nowhere!" A talisman flared - "Evil-Subduing Seal!"

Cornered, the dripping specter hissed: "A third-rate exorcist dares challenge me?" Her waterweed hair lashed like tentacles.

Xu Yang glanced at his cowering friend and smirked: "My 'brother' here just French-kissed a corpse. Want to see what else he'll do?"

The ghost shuddered, memories of that horrific "rescue" flashing through her mind.

"Ding! Water ghost experiences psychological trauma. +10 Virtue Points. +1 Water Manipulation Skill."
